The Down Low on Remote Work
Remote work, a wonderful way to not have to put clothes on every day. I myself work remotely and find that I quite enjoy the flexibility in schedule, in fact I would say for, me personally, it’s the top perk. So I have a good understanding of the desirability of remote work. Here on LinkedIn I have seen many people champion remote work and quite loudly say it is here to stay. I agree but wish to educate on certain points that I think any would be job seeker should know, particularly before they seek remote work.
First and foremost be honest with yourself and have that internal conversation to figure out if you will be even a good worker working from home. If you are not disciplined enough don’t do yourself the disfavor of seeking remote work. Without discipline you will fail and the company you work for will have no problem letting you go. Remote work is the competitive field right now. As far as companies are concerned remote work is the area that they can be picky. If you work remote be ready for your company to hold you to high standards. So no discipline will equal no job real quick.
Secondly the bad things about remote work. You will have distractions so make sure you have a space to mitigate them. Also have a schedule that will allow you to work around those you can't avoid. Communication with coworkers will suffer to a degree. So group projects will have added difficulty. Now this can be mitigated pretty well with video meetings. This brings me to a bit of a tangent but job seekers realize that most companies have capital tied up with offices. So don’t be surprised that companies that are group project oriented, any company really, to be slow offering remote work when they have already invested in office space. So the companies may be asking why video meetings when they have a nice napping room, I mean conference room already payed for. Returning to bad things about remote work, expect to be payed less. This article from Forbes[1] shows that companies are already using remote work to pay less and offer less in the way of raises.
Thirdly some news in the world of work. On Jan. 11th a bill called the Show UP Act, which stands for Stopping Home Office work’s Unproductive problems, was introduced in the House of Representatives. The act if passed would return the Federal Government to pre covid telework policies, which were more restrictive than current policies. While it looks unlikely to pass, at least any time soon, it is representative of a pushback to remote work. While such an act might not affect private industry those with experience working with government contracts will know that contractors are inevitably affected by what the government does. Also for those who didn’t know government contractors tend to be in a very lucrative business. Which means if you want to earn top dollar for your work then work for a company that has the government as its client.
So in finale I apologize if I come across as a Debbie downer, I myself prefer Little Debbie, but I want those of you who read this to have a better understanding of remote work and what is going on in its sphere. I desire that job seekers be informed of the current market so they can make educated decisions on the jobs that they seek so that they can succeed.
