- Why it matters: The partnership between
BRINC Drones
and
Echodyne
lowers the barrier to entry for public safety agencies looking to start or expand DFR programs.
- BRINC’s Responder and Lemur 2 drones are made in the U.S. and designed for 911 response.
- Signal from adjacent sector: The U.S. Commerce Department is expected to propose barring software developed in a "foreign entity of concern" in AVs with Level 3 automation and above.
- What they’re saying: The Department "is concerned about the national security risks associated with connected technologies in connected vehicles."
- What’s new: The Countering CCP Drone Act would mandate the inclusion of equipment produced by DJI on the FCC’s list of equipment that poses a risk to U.S. national security.
- Why it matters: DJI and Autel control more than 90% of the global drone market. Subsidized pricing allowed DJI to penetrate global markets rapidly, including within the U.S. and NATO countries, to the detriment of domestic manufacturers. The ubiquity and cost advantages of Chinese drones have disrupted foreign markets while introducing security vulnerabilities in sensitive areas such as critical infrastructure, military bases and urban surveillance.
- What’s new: AP recently reported that New York City emergency management officials have used drones to warn residents about potential threatening weather. DroneDJ reported that Mayor Eric Adams is considering using drones to respond to increased crime in Central Park. These announcements follow NYPD’s recent full launch of its DFR pilot program will be in full swing.
- Focus on security: NYPD’s current UAS fleet includes both PRC-made and U.S.-made, Blue UAS approved drones. Deputy Commissioner Daughtry testified before Congress at a May hearing that the agency is seeking to phase foreign-made, unsecure drones out of the fleet.
