Embracing Life Coaching
Life coaching began in the early nineties in the West and has since spread to different parts of the world. Often confused as a form of counseling or therapy, it is quite distinct in application. While the first two use the past as a basis for understanding and searching for solutions, Life coaching is optimistic and futuristic keeping the client focused on the positive.
Trained coaches assist people design their lives and bring out the best possible. What is interesting though is that this is done through the brilliance of the client. Solutions become tailor made. Life Coaches observe, listen and create insight that expose possibilities that can lead to designing action and choosing accountability.
Life coaching has become a very powerful tool in the areas of health, marriage, change management, family, the workplace and even strategic planning of all sorts.( Anderson, 1997 p. 36) summarizes it very nicely when he says "When we are motivated by goals that have deep meaning, by dreams that need completion, by pure love that needs expressing, then we truly live life" Trained and certified Life coaches operate within very strict codes of conduct by the International Coaching Federation that help draw a fine line between psychologists, therapists, consultants and coaches.
