Employee Spotlight: Brent Dorff

Employee Spotlight: Brent Dorff

How long have you worked for DTS?

Coming up on my one-year anniversary with DTS in June. Time flies when you’re having fun!

What's your job title? And what do you do?

I am a Process Engineer. There is a wide realm of responsibilities that fall within that, but I get to take our clients’ goals and help them integrate new equipment/piping into their intricate systems. This usually includes analysis of our client’s historical process operations, research of industry’s best practices, and performance of calculations to size vessels, reactors, pipelines, pumps, and various other pieces of equipment. All this work going into designing the most efficient and effective solutions for our clients. It’s a role I enjoy as I get to use my creativity to help resolve or mitigate real headaches our clients have.

Have you held any other positions, if so, what were they?

This has been my only role at DTS, but prior to DTS I worked as a Production Engineer and Process Engineer for a couple of different petrochemical and specialty chemical companies. Having this operational background has helped me connect with our clients and understand better the problems they have.

What’s your favorite thing about working for DTS?

I love that DTS serves multiple different industries. It gives me the unique opportunity to explore how different industries work. I go from making paint one day, to cheese the next day, then soybean/petroleum derivatives the day after. Though each industry has its own challenges, I love being able to work within the clients' requirements to design a solution that will improve the safety, quality, and efficiency of their processes.

Any accomplishments you'd like to highlight?

I recently received my Professional Engineering license from Texas and Illinois. This has been a goal of mine since my undergraduate days at BYU and I am grateful for all the mentors inside and outside of DTS that have supported me in that process.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to do this job in the future?

I think that my advice is give engineering consulting a try! When I started my career, I didn’t really consider it a potential career move, but this opportunity has been a positive change for me. Working for an engineering firm has pushed me to learn fast and develop relationships with my clients. Each day comes with its own challenges, but I enjoy being able to end the day with a sense of fulfillment and progress.

When you're not working, what do you enjoy doing?

My family is my biggest priority in my life. I enjoy spending time with my wife, Kelsey, and my two (soon to be three in July) sons. We love to play outside, read books, and with warmer weather have gotten into riding bikes around the neighborhood. I also enjoy playing racquetball with friends and serving the teenage boys in the community through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
