Empowering Women in the EV Industry

Empowering Women in the EV Industry

International Women’s Day is a global celebration of women’s achievements focusing on women’s rights and gender equality.

The celebration prompts us to openly discuss gender equality, reflect on our own beliefs, and highlight the work that remains to be done.

It is an opportunity to network and connect with others committed to gender equality, and educate ourselves on the essential roles women have played in the movements for voting rights, civil rights, labour rights and much more.

With the day approaching, its crucial to shine a spotlight on the contributions of women in the EV industry and celebrate their successes. Their contributions to innovation, sustainability, and leadership are shaping the future of transportation and paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable world.

While we’re seeing increasing numbers of women drive change from within the EV industry, there is still a lack of representation. Encouraging women to join the industry involves addressing both the opportunities available and the barriers they may face. Initiatives such as tailored mentorship programs for women, active promotion of diversity, and comprehensive resources and support systems can pave the path for inspiring more women to join the EV industry while promoting the well-being of those already part of it.

We caught up with ⚡️George Thurman 🔋 the founder of Women Drive Electric, to get an insight into her EV journey and the barriers to EV adoption amongst women.

How did your journey into the EV industry start?

''My husband has been in the vehicle repair industry for 20 years or so and opened EV Bodyshops in 2021. We offer like for like vehicles, so you don’t have to return to an ICE car while yours is being repaired.  This meant I drove electric courtesy cars and I was hooked from the start.  This passion led me to start Women Drive Electric Facebook group, as I found some of the others confusing and argumentative. I met Michelle Breffitt not long after and together we have grown the group to 2.2k. The group consists of women that drive EV helping each other on the journey to EV life with humour, support and lots of dog pictures!  The website is now live, and we have exciting plans for the future. ''

What excites you most about working in the industry?

''It’s incredibly interesting, innovative and fast paced. I love a problem to solve and it’s all about that in such an emerging technical and creative industry.  The people involved make it work as well, I was cabin crew for many years and this is the only place I have found such similar collaboration and teamwork where everyone works to the same outcome.''

How do you feel about the representation of women in the industry, and what do you think could be done to encourage more women to join the field?

''I wish it was 50:50 and think we are getting there.  The key to manufacturers selling more cars is to engage female consumers. I see it as a circular process. More women in the industry means more impact on design, features and marketing for example. We know how to engage and talk to each other naturally, just look at any ladies in a queue, someone will start a conversation!

As for what we can do, equal pay is a great start and cleaning up the image of stigma surrounding dealerships and showrooms.  The knowledge base needs to offer consumer’s confidence in their purchase, male or female.’’

Together, we must drive positive change, break down barriers, and create a future where everyone, regardless of gender is given the opportunity to thrive. Happy International Women's Day!

⚡️George Thurman 🔋 is truly inspiring. Can I just mention that the she is working on bringing an all female team to this years EV Rally but needs business support to turn this into a reality. Let's see if we can find a way to get an all women team on the rally. Either DM George or me and let's see what can be done.
