OIL AND GAS NEWS
BP scales back climate targets as profits hit record $27.7bn
Energy giant BP has reported record annual profits as it scaled back plans to reduce the amount of oil and gas it produces by 2030.
The company's profits more than doubled to $27.7bn (£23bn) in 2022, as energy prices soared after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Other energy firms have seen similar rises, with Shell reporting record earnings of nearly $40bn last week.
It has led to calls for energy firms to pay more tax as people's bills soar.
BP boss Bernard Looney said the British company was "helping provide the energy the world needs" while investing the transition to green energy.
But it came as the firm scaled back plans to cut carbon emissions by reducing its oil and gas output.
The company - which was one of the first oil and gas giants to announce an ambition to cut emissions to net zero by 2050 - had previously promised that emissions would be 35-40% lower by the end of this decade.
However, on Tuesday it said it was now targeting a 20-30% cut, saying it needed to keep investing in oil and gas to meet current demands.

North Sea firm hails “significant oil and gas discovery”
Deltic Energy has hailed what could be “one of the largest natural gas discoveries in the Southern North Sea in over a decade”, sending shares in the company soaring nearly 20 per cent.
The North Sea minnow informed investors today that it had made a “significant oil and gas discovery” at the Pensacola exploration well it is drilling in partnership with Shell .
It looks set to vindicate the decision by Deltic to focus on parts of the North Sa overlooked by other companies following the downturn in the oil and gas industry from 2014, while also boosting efforts to ramp up domestic energy supplies in the wake of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
Hydrogen standoff brings EU renewables law to screeching halt
The lawmaker in charge of steering negotiations on the EU’s revised renewable energy directive has cancelled an upcoming round of talks, laying the blame on the European Commission for failing to present a key piece of related hydrogen legislation.
The revised directive seeks to double the amount of renewables in Europe, aiming for a 40-45% share of wind, solar and biomass in the EU’s overall energy mix by 2030, up from 22% currently.
But talks came to a screeching halt at the weekend when the German lawmaker in charge of steering the negotiations in Parliament cancelled a planned round of talks scheduled on Tuesday (7 February).
Among other objectives, the directive defines the share of renewable energy that has to be reached in the transport sector – which includes hydrogen among so-called Renewable Fuels of Non-Biologic Origin (RFNBOs).
It is on this aspect that Pieper sees the European Commission at fault.

European wind industry attacks ‘absurd’ Danish halt to approvals
The European wind industry has called a sudden Danish government decision to suspend approvals for all offshore wind farms “absurd” in light of the EU’s push for a rapid rollout of clean energy supplies.
Denmark has become a leader in wind energy relative to its size thanks to its so-called “open door” programme for approving renewables projects, but this was called to a halt on Monday after the government cited concerns that it violates the EU’s state aid rules.
The interruption comes at a crucial time for Europe as it tries to protect its clean technology industries in response to the billions of dollars of incentives available to clean energy projects through the US’s Inflation Reduction Act.
The European Commission is also trying to push member states to hit higher targets and speed up permitting procedures for new wind and solar power projects as the bloc tries to wean itself off Russian natural gas.
Giles Dickson, chief executive of WindEurope, said that “pausing the established Danish approach to offshore wind development now will seriously undermine all these targets”. It would also create uncertainty about the substantial wind energy projects that were already under development in the North and Baltic seas.
“That’s completely absurd — especially at a time when the EU is easing its state aid rules to allow for more flexible investments in renewables,” he added.

NUCLEAR NEWS
France in new row with Germany and Spain over nuclear-derived hydrogen
A new row has erupted between France, Germany and Spain over nuclear energy, with Paris furious about a lack of support from Berlin and Madrid for its efforts to have nuclear-derived hydrogen labelled as ‘green’ in EU legislation, sources said.
The dispute, which could block a multi-billion euro hydrogen pipeline from the Iberian peninsula via France to Central Europe, is also delaying Europe’s green energy legislation and threatening to break out into the open at a European Union summit on Thursday.
France, which relies on its aging nuclear fleet to generate electricity, is leading a campaign to count hydrogen made using nuclear power – known as “red” hydrogen – in the EU’s new renewable energy targets, which currently focus on green hydrogen made using electricity from renewable sources.
Paris is now accusing Spain and Germany of reneging on commitments France says their leaders made at meetings in Barcelona and Paris to consider ‘low-carbon’ energy, which is code for nuclear, as clean.

EV and BATTERY NEWS
Australian startup Recharge wins bid for collapsed UK battery company Britishvolt
An emerging Australian company yet to construct a major project will be responsible for delivering on UK hopes to electrify its automotive industry after outbidding rivals to take over collapsed battery maker Britishvolt.
In a whirlwind fortnight, Recharge Industries put together an aggressive package that also revives plans to build a £3.8bn (A$6.7bn) “gigafactory” in the north of England to supply the next generation of UK-built electric vehicles, free from Chinese materials.
The Australian company, which sits under New York-based investment firm Scale Facilitation, beat three other offers to become the preferred bidder to take Britishvolt out of the hands of administrator EY.
The deal still needs to be finalised, which would trigger a process of paying back creditors.
“After a competitive and rigorous process, we’re confident our proposal will deliver a strong outcome for all involved,” Scale Facilitation’s Australian-born founder and chief executive, David Collard, said in a statement on Monday.
