EPIC shares report “Photonics for Disaggregated Data Centers”
The report, published by The Optical Society’s Industry Development Associates (OIDA) explores data center market trends and growth potential. Disaggregation in the data center refers to the dis-integration of traditional server architecture to create modular, pooled resources – such as pooled microprocessors, memory or storage. Disaggregation improves efficiency and data capacity. Optical technologies are making progress toward enabling the disaggregated data center architecture by reducing cost and improving performance bandwidth provisioning between racks. The analysis issued on 10 June 2015, details how optics will outcompete electrical interconnects for the links that enable disaggregation in the data center according to metrics of cost, performance and size.
Volume manufacturing at the optical component level continues to drive the price point of optical interconnects to the range necessary for disaggregated networking. The report provides insights from data center players such as Facebook, IBM and Intel on the needs and requirements to move to a photonic-enabled disaggregated data center. Additional insights included within the report are power, latency and architecture requirements, for optical component suppliers looking ahead to meet system-level design requirements.
This report is now also freely available to members of EPIC via the extranet. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or if I can be of any assistance.
