Top 5 Workforce Trends Shaping 2025

Top 5 Workforce Trends Shaping 2025

As we approach 2025, the workforce is evolving rapidly due to technological advancements, shifting demographics, and an increasing focus on sustainability and inclusion. A recent article by Forbes identified workforce 14 trends they anticipate for 2025 - but of these, five stood out head and shoulders above the others as the ones I see having the biggest impact in the year to come.

1. AI Reshaping Work

Artificial intelligence is driving efficiency across HR and operations, automating routine tasks while enabling deeper insights into employee engagement. This shift emphasizes the need for leaders and employees proficient in AI literacy.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, laid out his vision of the future of AI in one of his blog posts, “…eventually we can each have a personal AI team, full of virtual experts in different areas, working together to create almost anything we can imagine. Our children will have virtual tutors who can provide personalized instruction in any subject, in any language, and at whatever pace they need. We can imagine similar ideas for better healthcare, the ability to create any kind of software someone can imagine, and much more.”

2. The Green Economy and Skill Gaps

The renewable energy sector is booming, with roles in wind, solar, grid modernisation, and EV infrastructure experiencing significant demand. However, there’s a notable skills shortage.

According to the Australian Government's - Trade and Investment Commission, “Australia is ideally placed to capitalise on the global green economy and net zero transformation. We have abundant and high-quality renewable energy potential – world-leading sustainable industry practices, a highly skilled and innovative workforce, excellent trading relationships, and significant mineral resources.”

3. The Rise of Flexible Work Models

Hybrid and remote work arrangements are reshaping the way businesses operate, offering flexibility that many employees now expect as a standard. Post-pandemic studies indicate that a significant portion of workers prefer remote or hybrid setups, with over half of global employees wanting to work remotely at least three days a week. Interestingly, employees with young children are particularly inclined toward remote options to balance work and family life.

However, not all executives are fully on board. A recent survey by KPMG reveals a complex landscape where 83% of CEOs aim to return employees to the office, creating a potential clash with workers' preferences. Organisations succeeding in this new era are those that design thoughtful hybrid policies. For instance, leveraging behavioural science to "nudge" employees toward in-person collaboration when it matters most can foster engagement without imposing mandates.

4. Inclusion and Employee Wellbeing

A diverse and inclusive workplace not only enhances employee morale but also drives better business outcomes. As employees increasingly value workplaces where they feel seen and included, organisations must address the broad spectrum of wellbeing, including mental health.

Research highlights that vague or inconsistent communication about future work policies can exacerbate anxiety and burnout among employees. Companies taking proactive steps, such as mental health initiatives and clear, inclusive communication strategies, see marked improvements in productivity and engagement. This trend aligns with findings from McKinsey, which underscore that comprehensive communication plans and visible support systems are critical to fostering an environment of belonging and resilience.

5. Upskilling and Reskilling

As technology evolves, so must the workforce. Companies need professionals who can thrive in roles demanding continuous learning. Fortunately, upskilling has never been so accessible, with free online resources such as LinkedIn learning, as well as online universities and courses. As AI continues to integrate into the workplace and change the established functions of a plethora of roles, upskilling will continue to be a major tactical necessity for employees of all levels of businesses.
