I have farmed all my life here in Ste. Genevieve, MO. I took over from my father and he took over from his dad, it is kind of in the bloodline. We did have a cow-calf operation but went strictly to backgrounding calves right now and it is working well.

We recently bought the Bobcat Versahandler machine, we had a wheel loader before that. When we switched to the Versahandler, I was really skeptical about it at first. It was all quite a change going from a wheel loader, but once I got into it, I would not go back to the wheel loader.

Every day I get a little older and to climb up into that wheel loader with four or five steps all day long compared to this here, you just climb with just a step or two, it has no comparison. Getting to tight quarters in the commodity barn, you can just turn around on the dime compared to the wheel loader. The speed has a twist and then turns it around, it is just great. You can get it loaded in half the time which means a lot. As far as getting around in the mud and stuff, it does great. We load manure with it, we have a lot of tight quarters and we clean the cattle barn, we put a lot of hours on that machine.

Benefits of the Bobcat Versahandler

I like the reverse fan to keep the radiator area clean. That’s a great feature. It has good visibility since there is a lot of glass and gives you a 360-degree view from the operator’s seat. It takes the place of a tractor and wheel loader. But, if I had to load this all with the tractor and loader, it would take three times as long, there is just no comparison. The telescopic arm, means a lot too. There have been so many times when I will be digging into the soilage wanting to get some of the top parts or rake some down, I have to telescope or reach up pretty high to reach what I want to get to. With a regular loader, you just cannot do that.

I did not think that it would handle that bigger bucket. We have got a big bucket on there and I can put thirty-five hundred pounds of soilage in there so as far as getting it loaded in soilage, I really have no problem. I was skeptical about handling that big bucket but that is not a problem. Plus having bigger tires in the front and compared to a tractor where you have all the weight in the back end of a tractor, the Versahandler has a lot more stability.
