Fashion is a big part of everyone's life. Whether or not you consider yourself someone who follows fashion trends, clothes are a necessity for all. In previous editions of Delving with Delvify, we discussed many factors of what build up to sustainability and the steps that brands have to take in order to reach their 2030 goals.
In this edition, we look back on the commitments that the fashion industry has pledged to make and what the progress has been so far. The video below gives an outline of the ways that brands have been edging toward their internal sustainable goals:
Falling Short
The UN had implemented a number of Sustainable Development Goals that industries worldwide would have to reach by 2030 in order to limit global temperatures from rising past the 1.5 degrees mark. Recently, the UN released a report to update what progress has been made and to see if things are on track, and the results are quite dire.
Out of the 140 targets that were set, approximately 12% were on track to reach the goals worldwide. This situation is a huge cause for concern as this slow progress means that carbon dioxide levels are still continuously growing and the use of renewable energy will remain low.
There is still a small window of opportunity for all industries to seriously pick up their act. Although it seems 2030 is still a number of years away, the slow progress means that the chances for future generations to have a livable habitat will slowly diminish as well. In order to combat this, global leaders and regulators are key to establishing the rules that companies have to follow.

No Tolerance for Slow Growth
In recent years, we have seen brands make many sustainability claims and get called out for greenwashing. The importance of brands staying true to their words and sustainability actions has never been so critical. Fast fashion brands are under scrutiny for their overproduction while luxury brands are finding new ways to make their collections sustainable through vegan materials.
This is where the Fashion Pact comes in - an industry-wide movement that includes 32 brands. The Fashion Pact aims to help align the industry to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals through three pillars: Climate, Biodiversity, and Oceans. This initiative seemed like a good first step for brands to come together and put their heads together for the greater good.

However, a few brands have recently exited the Fashion Pact including Stella McCartney, Selfridges, and Hermès. This has been speculated due to the fact that the progress that the Fashion Pact has been making is extremely slow. Despite this, there still have been new members such as Asics, Chloe, and J.Crew joining.
These changes indicate the dissatisfaction that some brands have over the progress that the Fashion Pact has made. It would be ideal to see further initiatives from them after the departure of those brands in order to reinforce how serious they are about the goals that the fashion industry want to achieve.

Technology to the Rescue
One way for the fashion industry to upkeep its promises and not show consumers that they have these commitment issues is the adoption of fashion technology. With issues like overproduction, technology can help alleviate some common problems like material waste.
Technology can help improve fashion sustainability in several ways, such as using biodegradable materials, implementing recycling programs, reducing waste through better inventory management, and using data analytics to optimize production processes. Additionally, advances in 3D printing and artificial intelligence can help reduce the environmental impact of fashion production by allowing for more precise and efficient manufacturing.
There are many different ways that brands can explore and find the best next step to take toward their sustainability goals. Delvify's Fashion Tech solution aims to help reduce material waste as well as overproduction. We enable brands to discover the materials that they need and ease communication with their dedicated manufacturers as well. We hope to bring new technology to the fashion industry to assist brands to reach their ambitious goals.
