Featured Lab Fridays: Cincinnati

Serving customers across the Midwest and Central regions of the United States, Transcat’s Cincinnati Calibration Lab is an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited facility that offers a variety of calibration disciplines and service options. Formerly the home of Alliance Calibration, the Cincinnati lab was acquired in June 2022 and has since maintained Alliance’s legacy of delivering precise and trustworthy solutions that customers rely on. Led by James Dull, Cincinnati’s Service Lab Manager, the location offers in-lab and on-site services with quick turnaround times from a team of skilled technicians and experienced support staff.

The Cincinnati lab works with a handful of different industries, including automotive, defense and government contracts, aeronautical, medical, pharmaceutical, and power generation. The location provides a mix of calibration disciplines, with its in-depth dimensional capabilities making it truly stand out.

“We’re heavy into dimensional work,” says Dull. “In fact, we’ve been asked to go and train other labs in dimensional work due to our expertise in that area, specifically with surface plate calibration and resurfacing.”

In addition to surface plate calibration and resurfacing, the lab’s dimensional work includes gage blocks, hardness testers, optical comparators, vision systems, thread plugs, cylinder plugs, plain rings, and more. A large portion of their dimensional work comes through on-site requests, with the team serving the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky markets alongside other areas in the region.

Additional capabilities include electrical, temperature, and pressure. The lab also offers torque wrench capabilities up to 2,000 ft. lbs., transducers up to 1,000 ft. lbs., load cells up to 2,000 lbf. (tension and compression), and load cells up to 20,000 lbf. (compression only). Upholding Transcat’s commitment to quality, all of the lab’s services are traceable to SI units through NIST.

Similar to Dull, many of the people who make up the team in Cincinnati have been working there for years, which helps create a strong work culture in the lab.

“We have a solid team here, and many of the technicians have been here for five, seven, 10 years, some even longer than that,” explains Dull. “We’ve worked hard to develop a nice, comfortable environment, and we do everything we can to maintain that. We all work well together and get along and respect each other, which helps keep that positive environment in place.”

That kind of lab environment not only benefits the team working there, but also their customers.

“The staff here in Cincinnati are all personable and friendly, and I think customers appreciate the interactions they have with them,” says Dull. “I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from customers about how much they enjoy their time working with the technicians and the other staff at the lab. We’re quick to respond, and there’s good communication between us and our customers, which we know is important.”

Dull and the rest of the team in Cincinnati also understand how every customer is critical to the lab’s success.

“No matter the scope of work, every customer is going to receive the same level of service across the board. The culture here has instilled the idea that every customer is important, and I think customers get that feeling when they work with us.”
