The Covid-19 pandemic and its resulting variants had forced difficult decisions for the sports event industry with cancellations, postponements and many adjustments in the last 2 years plus.

The much celebrated “Sports-in-the-City” event saw a record turnout of 53 Men and Women’s teams from 30 countries competing intensely over 5 days from 6 to 19 July 2022 at the Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza. Sell-out crowds turned out for the event since the opening day with 600 spectators, not including passers-by, were caught in attendance on the final day of the event.

KIN was involved from the planning stage in the early days, to setting it up and eventually ensuring the event was executed with delivery-excellence. Further to providing event logistics, KIN also provided players destination management services, ensuring that their stay in Singapore would be well taken care of.

Across the globe and across industries, there has been increased focus to take environmental, social and governance issues into considerations. The execution of sporting events is no exception.

As part of the Singapore Government’s new S$20 million plan to ramp up sport programmes and to bring back mass participation events, the Sport Green Plan was also announced by Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth Eric Chua earlier this year. The Sport Green Plan will also provide platforms for Singaporean to participate in reduce, reuse and recycle initiatives.

With the FIBA 3×3 2022 Asia Cup basketball competition obtaining the international sustainability standard ISO 20121 – an internationally recognised standard which outlines the requirements for an Event Sustainability Management System, as well as event venue Marina Bay Sands being a “Carbon Neutral Venue”, KIN was tasked with providing sustainable solutions for this edition of the competition.

In line with the organiser’s sustainability efforts and initiatives, several key actions were introduced. To help ensure a reduction in carbon footprint, athletes’ accommodation were sourced with consideration given to their distance to training and competition venues. Athletes, officials and volunteers were also provided with ez-link cards to take public transport when moving around as an additional step to reduce carbon footprint. Reusable water bottles and laundry bags were provided to reduce the use of single-use plastics, and recyclable materials were introduced for the production of signages and accreditation passes. The event also utilised power supply within the provision of Venue Grid Power without the deployment of power generators.

Having executed many sporting events over the years, KIN's gratification comes from the belief that our clients and partners have in us and the passion our team continues to have in wanting to do and give our best to the project.

I was there as a player and I was super impressed at how smoothly everything went. I remember feeling proud of the fact that our nation can too, produce world-class service at an international sporting event. The Kin Productions team was super friendly and they even let me keep the laundry bags after the competition had ended! Thank you Kin Productions for the wonderful experience!
