Fire and Standard operating Procedures in Work place
FIRE CONTROL PROCEDURE It is standard operating procedure to attempt to stabilize fire conditions by extending WHEREVER POSSIBLE an aggressive well-placed and adequate offensive interior fire attack.
- Report the Incident: Fire extent, Type of Fire whether electric or otherwise. Describe Floor and Room where incident occurred. Call Fire Brigade Telephone 16 at very onset of Fire.
- Fire Alarm will be sounded based on reports that indicate an actual or potential situation by the incident controller or any one by observing a building on fire. Must inform Reception Desk who will also inform Fire Brigade for Help and coordinate all actions.
- Building Evacuation: Occupants must evacuate before it’s too late. Use stairs and not lift.
- Defensive Strategy-- To first reduce fire extension and then bring the fire under control based upon the Risk Management System. Timely using Fire extinguishers.
- The Incident Leader will support with whatever resource and action is required to reduce fire extension and to bring the fire under control at each notification of elapsed time. Maintain an awareness of the overall situation and your role in it. The key responsibility is to safely evacuate employees from the building in the event of Fire and any major Emergency.
- Procedures to Count Employees The emergency action plan should include procedures for counting for all employee and customers after an emergency evacuation. It is important to know that everyone got out from the premises. Fire Wardens should be from the Respective Floors.
- Rescue and Medical Duties Emergency action plans should indicate which employees are responsible for rescue and providing First Aid if required to employees or on site customers.
- Portable Fire Extinguishers Security should have the list of the portable fire extinguishers available or placed at stores along with their types. Must practice during off working hours for safety drills like fire Alarm Bells or use of portable extinguishers etc.
- Training of Employees Employee training is an important part of good fire prevention planning. Such trained employee, we call as FIRE WARDENS. Because most big Fires start from small, and during the first 5-10 minutes of a fire determines the severe damage. Therefore, well trained staff’s team should be available on floors at all times and be trained in the following Areas.
- Alarm Systems
- Electricity Shutdown Procedures
- Evacuations Plans
- Fire Fighting through Handling of Fire Extinguishers
- First Aid
- Lists of Major Workplace Hazards We need to identify all the workplace hazards available at building. List of all major hazards should be available with Security and Maintenance team at all times like petrol, diesel, cooking oils etc.
- Building Maintenance/Engineering Team Fire prevention Plan should include the names of Contractor Company responsible for maintenance of the equipment and systems installed to prevent from Fire.Maintenance Team to assign staff to shut down Main Electric supply to limit further damage to the building.
