Four Main Principles of Servant Leadership
The first not-for-profit organization I was a part of was Scouting. Then came 18 X 72, to lower the voting age to 18 by the year 1972, followed by LSEOE solar eclipse chasing around the world, followed by student government at college, Big Brother, back to Scouting, and Freemasonry. over the decades I have observed and learned a lot about leadership, and leadership styles. Some of my leadership coaches were tough on me (in a good way) and I have learned that there are Four Main Principles of Servant Leadership.
· Encourage diversity of thought.
· Create a culture of trust.
· Have an unselfish mindset.
· Foster leadership in others.
For the past decade I had the pleasure to support and coach a significant number of managers who aspire to enhance their leadership skills.
I have come to identify a set of ten characteristics of the servant leader that are of critical importance, that I want to share:
1. Listening
2. Empathy
3. Healing
4. Awareness
5. Persuasion
6. Conceptualization
7. Foresight
8. Stewardship
9. Commitment to growth of people, and
10. Building community
What type of leader are you? Do you want to lead or follow? Do you aspire to any of these characteristics?
Add to the conversation and share with us your thoughts on leadership and leadership styles and lessons you have learned along the way.
