Top Notes

Top notes are the initial scents you smell when you first apply a fragrance. They are typically light and evaporate quickly, lasting about 5 to 15 minutes. Top notes create the first impression and are crucial in shaping the overall perception of the fragrance.

Examples:

- Citrus: Lemon, Bergamot, Orange

- Herbs: Basil, Mint, Coriander

- Fruits: Apple, Pineapple, Blackberry

Middle Notes (Heart Notes)

Middle notes emerge once the top notes evaporate and can last from 20 minutes to an hour or more. They form the core of the fragrance and help mask the initial sharpness of the top notes while blending smoothly with the base notes.

Examples:

- Floral: Rose, Jasmine, Lavender

- Spices: Cinnamon, Cardamom, Nutmeg

- Green: Grass, Tea, Ivy

Base Notes

Base notes are the foundation of the fragrance and become more noticeable after the middle notes dissipate. They add depth and richness, anchoring the lighter notes. Base notes are long-lasting and can remain on the skin for several hours, sometimes even days.

Examples:

- Woody: Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Vetiver

- Resins: Amber, Myrrh, Frankincense

- Animalic: Musk, Civet, Leather

Fragrance Pyramid

The fragrance pyramid is a model used to describe how these notes interact:

1. Top Notes: Initial impression, light, and fresh.

2. Middle Notes: Core of the fragrance, emerges after top notes fade.

3. Base Notes: Deep, rich foundation, lasting the longest.

Example of a Fragrance Breakdown

Let's take an example of a popular fragrance to illustrate the notes:

Fragrance: Chanel No. 5

- Top Notes: Aldehydes, Neroli, Ylang-Ylang, Bergamot, Lemon

- Middle Notes: Iris, Jasmine, Rose, Orris Root, Lily-of-the-Valley

Understanding Fragrance Notes in Context

- Top Notes: Capture attention with a fresh, lively burst.

- Middle Notes: Develop the character and essence of the fragrance.

- Base Notes: Provide depth, longevity, and a lasting impression.
