Take a piece of paper and draw a horizontal line on it. Put a little vertical stripe somewhere in the middle and mark it with the word ‘now’. This is the timeline of life. Towards the left of the stripe is the past and on the right side is the future. Now consider what life is: life is a continuous flow of now-moments. It develops from one now-moment to the next now-moment. Based on this view of life, the past can be considered historical now-moments or, in other words, now moments gone-by. The future then consists of now-moments not yet materialised, now-moments that are still to come. And the now? The now is now, it is the only real moment. The only moment people have. Life only happens in the now. Life is only created in the now. Now is the gift of life; that is why it is also called the present.
It is good to understand that life is only lived in the now-moment. With this wisdom awareness, people are more likely to deliberately choose to make the most of the now, to use it to create the life they want, to enjoy it. But what do people without a meditative mind tend to do? They spend much of their precious life regretting the past and worrying about the future. They are not in the now.
The mind can only be in one place at the time. This means that, if the mind is in the past, it cannot be here and now. Similarly, if the mind is occupied with the future, it cannot be here and now. People with untrained minds do not use the now to live the life they want. They miss out on life because most of their thinking is focused on the past or the future. This means that people miss the beauty, the joy, the opportunities that life is offering them. It means that people forget to live and enjoy. It means that people do not make the most of life. Only a mind that is focused on the now, is fully connected with life and can benefit from all that life has to offer.
Man is born, and man will die one day. This circle of life applies to all of us. It is not something to be sad about. Rather it is something to be aware of and to use that awareness to our advantage. The fact that one day all of us will leave this earthly plane is a powerful reminder to make the most of our time. People are on a countdown, starting at the day of birth. Life is running out. After every day, man has one day less to live. Death is a powerful teacher that tells us to watch every day of life, to pay attention to every day, to make the most of every day, to focus on what is important.
It is good to be aware of one’s priorities in life. A person that knows what is important, can consciously decide to spend his time, energy and effort on realising what matters. That person will be making the most of every now moment and will be the deliberate creator of his own life story.
