From Bank Better Champion to Leader – A Capitec Success Story

Nature Khumalo has a message to aspiring leaders: Lead by Example and embrace the journey!

Introduce yourself and tell us more about your journey with Capitec.

In November 2018, I began as a Bank Better Champion (welcoming clients and coordinating branch flow, as first point of contact it was my responsibility to uphold the service quality and standard of the brand and branch), 5 months later I became a Service Consultant. Initially overwhelmed by the responsibility and expectations, I quickly adapted to the fast pace. After 5 years in the role, I applied for and recently became an Assistant Manager.

What inspired you to pursue a leadership role in your career?

I was part of a team that achieved remarkable goals through collaborative efforts. Our leader empowered us to take ownership and make decisions. That experience sparked my desire to pursue leadership roles where I can foster a similar environment and make a meaningful difference.

As a new leader what is the most challenging part. I find developing a leadership style and identity quite challenging. For me, it started with self-reflection to understand my values, strengths and passions. I identified my purpose and defined my core values, which guide my decisions and actions.

How did you adapt your consulting skills to be effective in a leadership context?

I work hard to maintain my core values and authenticity by rising like before this role also requires one to rise above challenges and staying consistent.

How do you balance personal growth with professional aspirations?

It requires a lot of intentional time and goal alignment; I prioritize activities that nourish my mind, body and spirit, while also pursuing my personal objectives. I embrace challenges and step out of my comfort zone to foster growth in both areas with support from my peers, mentors and loved ones.

What advice would you give to aspiring leader’s roles?

Demonstrate the behaviors and work ethic you expect from others. Leadership is a journey that takes a lot of time, effort and dedication to develop the necessary skills and qualities to be an effective leader. Lastly take that leap of faith!
