From Family Automotive Shop Marketer to Senior Product Manager

Slickdeals Bring It Home features an interview with one of our team members during our monthly all company town hall meeting. This month, we spoke with Micah Andrews, Senior Product Manager, who has been with Slickdeals for just over two years, having joined in December of 2019. Micah is on our “Brave Mountain” team, focused on CRM Marketing and our Slickdeals Core Shopping Experience.

How did you get into Product?

My parents owned an automotive sales shop, selling SAABs, so you can all imagine how that turned out. It didn’t. SAAB went bankrupt in 2011.

I was studying marketing in school and my parents were trying to figure out how do we sell more SAABs. They had an email list and I thought to myself, “Okay, I’m pretty sure I can figure this out.” I taught myself to code email templates, and pretty soon I realized I could build entire websites. I started getting into product development and design, as well as WordPress development.

I started doing some projects for friends while I was in school, and I just happened to have a few family members who were in product at the time. They would ask me, “So what do you want to do after college?” I was thinking things like web development and was telling them about the work I was doing with the business, such as the emails I was sending. They were like, it sounds like you’re far less interested in the craft of those things and more about the outputs and the results. You should think about going into product.

I said, “That’s a great idea, what is product management?” And from there, ended up going into product.

How did you find Slickdeals?

I worked with a teammate at two previous companies. When I found out he came to Slickdeals, I gave him a little time to get settled and then connected with him about opportunities.

What do you like about being a product manager?

I really like seeing things change. I thrive on being able to take something from just an idea and think about what are all of the things that need to happen to turn this into a real thing that hopefully produces results that we’re looking for.

How do you keep your team engaged in this virtual world?

I’ve found jokes work very well, memes; especially my team Brave Mountain 2.0, our meme game has gotten a lot stronger.

Otherwise, the team is really good at trusting each other, working with each other when we need to. When does someone need to jump in? The team is overall good at making sure that we’re moving forward and that’s how we stay engaged.

Outside of Slickdeals, what do you like to do in your free time?

Probably the biggest thing is I play Dungeons and Dragons pretty frequently. For those who don’t know, we have a group of folks at Slickdeals that play - you should join the #dnd Slack channel.

I unsuccessfully ran a game at the beginning of the pandemic. In that process, I learned that I am a forever player and not a dungeon master.

We know you enjoy watching Netflix. Tell us about a mediocre show you’ve watched on there.

A mediocre one? It’s on HBO, not Netflix, but I watched Raised by Wolves, that was pretty mediocre. I watched it because one of the main characters was an actor from the show Vikings. Unfortunately his character on this show was not that great. My biggest problem with it is that the robots have too much human emotion. It just makes me frustrated that they’re having the same issues that a human couple would have, but they’re robots, and they’re supposed to be smarter than us...but they’re not.

Final fun fact about Micah:

I like to drink water, and no coffee. Still water, not sparkling.
