Fueling the Future of Aviation with Air bp’s Federica Berra

If you have any doubts that traditional oil and gas companies must lead into the energy future, you need to listen to Federica Berra on the latest episode of Energy Thinks talking about the challenges of decarbonizing aviation. Federica, CEO and senior vice president of global aviation at Air bp, faces seemingly impossible technical, political, and perception challenges in her quest to decarbonize an extremely complex sector that requires an undivided attention to safety and is central to our lives. (Sound familiar?!) And she meets these challenges with a fiercely optimistic vision and commitment to execution—the two key ingredients for energy leadership.

Air bp plays an important role in bp’s goal of becoming net zero by 2050. On the podcast, Federica and I discuss the opportunities and challenges of scalability, supply chain engagement, and policy. When you’ve finished listening, I think you’ll agree: Federica’s authenticity and commitment as a leader provide a great model for the rest of us.

Some of Federica’s insights:

On why energy leadership in this sector matters: “Aviation is a fascinating industry. …There's something romantic about it. It connects people. It connects community. It supports trade. It supports the business.”

On why you want a major like bp focusing on decarbonizing aviation fuels: “Safety is paramount. We deal with all sorts of weather conditions, but one of our greatest focuses and passion is on fuel quality. There is no roadside assistance when you're at 36,000 feet.”

On the role policy has in decarbonizing aviation: “Policy is fundamental because it provides certainty and investment that unlocks demand. It creates a level playing field for all the players.”

On how to build trust with skeptical stakeholders: “We gain trust by showing our commitment—and  keep on delivering.”
