Give The Gift of Inspiration this Holiday Season
What are you going to do to inspire someone during this holiday season?
Every day, we have an opportunity to make a positive impact on someone else.
Almost exactly three years ago to this day, I was standing in a long line at my local post office shipping out gifts to loved ones out of state. While everyone shuffles in place with their boxes in arms patiently waiting with holiday spirit, my eyes are drawn to a disheveled older gentleman at the counter handing the post office worker two boxes. The clerk reviews the destination addresses, prints the labels and attaches them to the packages. She reviews the price options and he requests the cheapest that will ensure delivery for both by Christmas.
“$47.85”.
The gentleman pulls out his wallet which is loosely held together by one remaining leather band across the center and hands her a credit card.
Perplexed, the clerk sadly says that the card has been declined.
“But, I thought there was still some credit left. My wife must have used more than I thought. Here is my debit card.”
He hands her the card. Same result.
A wave of embarrassment and sadness crosses the man’s face. I look to the others in line who quietly try to mind their own business by looking the other way.
The thought crossed my mind…It’s only $48.
“I will come back later today.”
I hesitated as he exited with his packages in hand…And, I have regretted that moment ever since.
To this day, I remember that gentleman every day that I walk out the door. Not as a reminder of what I did not do, but what can I do today to help someone?
When that opportunity presents itself, I do not hesitate anymore.
And, I still look for the man to personally apologize and tell him how much that moment has inspired me since. If you are out there, thank you!
Today is a new today. Tomorrow another.
What are you going to do to make a difference this holiday? And every day after?
Because, your opportunity might just walk out the door...

4yYes - I have had a very similar experience. As we grow, we learn that being of service and helping others is the most rewarding inspiration in our day.
