Go HR Offers Business Owners Free Advice Amid General Election Uncertainty

The build up to the election is over and general election day is here!  However, many business owners remain anxious about how potential changes will impact their business and employees.

In the run up to the election, all the major political parties have released their manifestos outlining their plans for employment rights if they come into power.

Labour has unveiled a plan to make 'Work Pay,' detailing how they intend to support the working people of the UK, increase the minimum wage into a ‘genuine living wage’, end fire and rehire, banning zero hours contracts, update trade union legislation, increased requirement for large employers in relation to menopause and many more changes.

The Conservatives have pledged to overhaul the ‘fit note’ system, cut employee’s national insurance to 6% from 2027, abolish NI for self-employed, funding for new apprenticeships and amend the equality act.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats have included raising the minimum wage for those on zero hours contracts and the right to request fixed hours contract after 12 month.  Introduce paid neonatal care, requirement for businesses to share their parental leave/pay policies, scrapping the lower apprentice rate and established a new ‘dependant contractor’ employment status as well as other commitments

Only time will tell what changes will come about.

Ultimately, businesses need to plan for change by developing a strategy to quickly adapt to any legislative changes post-election. This might include updating employee handbooks, training materials, and compliance procedures.

By taking these steps, you can ensure that your company navigates the election period smoothly, supports employee rights, and remains compliant with any new laws that may arise. Preparing ahead of time will help mitigate any disruptions and maintain a positive workplace atmosphere.
