Happy National Intern Day 2024!

Happy National Intern Day 2024!

On the last Thursday of each July, Black & Veatch celebrates National Intern Day, an observance dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the future leaders of the business world – interns! Our interns continue to be a valuable part of our organization by offering fresh perspectives and building the next generation of difference-makers.

The Black & Veatch 2024 Summer Internship Program welcomed 231 interns – 112 at regional offices and 119 at the World Headquarters in Kansas City – from more than 80 colleges and universities nationwide. The 12-week program offers a mix of real project work for an industry leader, mentorship and learning opportunities, and engaging team-building activities with other interns.

To share how our interns make an impact each summer, we are highlighting members of our 2024 class. Among these interns are:

  • Sathvik Kasarabada - Electrical Engineering Intern
  • Kiersten Wille - Environmental Intern
  • Navya Nittala - Infrastructure Analyst Intern/Information Systems
  • Hunter Jackson - Learning & Development Specialist Intern

Check out what they have been up to this summer below:

Why did you choose to do an internship with Black & Veatch?

Sathvik

As the son of an employee-owner of almost 25 years at Black & Veatch, I was naturally inspired by the professional and personal growth that I’ve seen this company provide As an aspiring electrical engineer who values a positive environment to further develop myself as a person and professional, it was an easy choice to spend another summer here. Ever since I started working at Black & Veatch, I have been accepted and welcomed with open arms. I feel the support and encouragement to flourish within my field of electrical engineering by my team every day when I walk into work.

Kiersten

My previous internship was with another company in the industry so I had some exposure to the world of consulting and loved the fast pace of it all. As a prompt person, I greatly appreciated the turnaround time from submitting my application, to scheduling the interview, to receiving my offer. I could tell from my interview, this team had energy and passion for their work. This was also an opportunity for me to move somewhere new, where I knew no one. While it got increasingly daunting as the departure date approached, I was quick to adapt thanks to the push for connection within the intern program at Black & Veatch. I have met so many fantastic individuals.

Navya

I chose Black & Veatch because of the company culture and people who allow me to grow in the fast-paced technology infrastructure industry. There are many opportunities for me to learn from industry professionals while working on real-world projects that truly make an impact.

Hunter

I heard great things from friends and neighbors who actively work there or have interned there. It is a great way for me to explore a whole new side to both my major and my passions!

What advice would you give to a peer who’s considering interning at Black & Veatch?

Sathvik

I’d say, be open to learning. Not just within your discipline, but also learning for your own personal growth. My time here as an intern has taught me vital skills to help organize and balance my professional life, and by interpolating those techniques to my personal life, I've become a better individual for myself and others.

Kiersten

Do it! I have nothing but fantastic things to say about the early careers team and the people here. The people here encourage creativity, curiosity, and innovation in everything we do. While I was afraid of inconveniencing full-time workers as an intern with limited experience, I can assure you everyone wants you to excel and learn during your time here and that goes well beyond the people in your department.

Advocate for yourself! Ask the questions you have, tell your supervisor what you want to get involved with and where your interests lie, introduce yourself to people outside your department and demonstrate that you are not only here to learn but are eager to do so! Keep saying yes!!

There are so many opportunities to volunteer and get involved during the internship, and I urge you to take advantage of as many as you can. The power of networking is often understated in school, but it’s the primary way for you to create new opportunities and open new doors for yourself. Any chance to chat with someone is an opportunity to network, so take advantage of the interactions you get to have with others at the company.

Navya

Reach out and ask questions! There are so many people who are willing to help or point you in the right direction.

Hunter

You should do it! Be open to trying new things and really apply yourself to both your work and networking with all the great people here.

What did you look forward to the most during your internship?

Sathvik

As a returning intern, I was excited to further dive into the world of electrical engineering by applying my academic skills to professional projects. I looked forward to my elected leadership role in our intern projects, presentations, and activities, as well as watching the KC Royals with my team! Collaborating with fellow like-minded interning employees is not just socially fulfilling, but it also allows for expansion of my capacity for creative knowledge and solutions to engineering problems.

Kiersten

I was excited for the personal and professional growth opportunities woven into every component of my summer here at Black and Veatch. Within the first week, I had transformed my knowledge of due diligence work, got introduced to the inner workings of fuel oil infrastructure at energy plants, and began the environmental review for a large renewable energy project.

Navya

I have enjoyed meeting like-minded peers and leveraging new technologies while gaining hands-on experience I wouldn’t get in the classroom!

Hunter

I love the diversity of projects I got to work on here and it has been exciting to learn as much as I can this summer. Also, the rotating soup in the cafeteria is great!

Join us in thanking our 2024 intern class for their dedication and creativity this summer as we continue building a world of difference.
