Has Social Media Negatively Impacted The Perception Of The Yachting Industry?

Here we have a question that was brought up in one of our recent podcasts (#CrewCall) with Second Officer, Martin Tongue (100m+). We discussed how it is becoming more common with crew entering the industry that that the perceived notion of a job onboard a Superyacht is all about the glamour, salaries and exotic destinations. Sure, these are all perks of the job and true to some degree but the reality of the long hours; lack of sleep; time away from family, friends and normality; not to mention the sheer hard work is far less often talked about.

Is social media & certain popular TV Shows in part to blame for this perception? Are yachting jobs being sold to applicants as a 'gap year' in some cases?
