The Heavy Metal Minute, Edition 1

What is Dealer Absorption Rate and Why is it Important?

You are probably thinking, “great another number to remember and calculate every month.” We get it! You’re busy, you’ve got a lot to do, and working out mathematical equations probably does not seem to add immediate value to your business (or department). In our latest blog post, we cover how to maximize the opportunities to drive parts and service gross margin.

Meet Jay Lucas

Jay has been recruiting since 1995, so almost 30 years of experience.  In 2018 he acquired the 40-year-old heavy equipment recruiting firm, Jordan Sitter Associates.  His experience implementing highly efficient recruiting processes and leading-edge technology pairs perfectly with a niche recruiting firm like JSA that could benefit from a turbo or two on the engine (so to speak).  While Jay is also the President of Reputable Recruiting, LLC, his time is dedicated to building great relationships in the heavy equipment industry. He works most closely with manufacturers and dealers but is experienced working with rental and re-man companies, too.

Jay is happily married and has 4 children ranging from 19 to 28 years old. In his spare time, he reads (non-fiction), studies the bible, travels with his wife, and enjoys cooking and yard work, as well as fishing (saltwater) and hunting (birds mostly).  With the completion of his “covid gym” he also enjoys exercising and staying physically fit.  Check out more about Jay here or connect with Jay on LinkedIn.

Job Seeker Tips & Tricks: 3 Common Resume Myths

Myth #1 - I should only have one resume

This is nonsense.  It is impossible to have a resume that highlights all of your skills and experiences in such a way that it is perfect for any job you apply to.  We recommend that you look closely at every job you apply for and make sure your skills are appropriately represented on your resume.  If not, then you will want to make the needed edits to showcase your skills.

Myth #2 - Resumes shouldn’t be longer than one page

This is also nonsense.  We are in the information age!  Of course, we do recommend trying to keep the resume to no more than 2 pages.  To maximize the space on the page, avoid redundancies and eliminate wasted real estate on the page (ie. margins, spaces, blank lines, indentions, etc). If you have project work that is too much for a resume, but important to boast, then we would recommend a resume addendum.  This is a separate document that can be included or excluded as you see fit.

Myth #3 - The best resume style is chronological format

This may be true in some cases.  A major factor by hiring managers is stable work history, as well as career progression.  If you have good career progression and stability then we’d recommend sticking with this format.  However, if you want a resume that highlights specific skills or experience, along with key accomplishments, then the functional format resume may be a better option.

Hiring Manager Tips & Tricks - Hiring off the Resume is not Best Practice

We’ve worked with thousands of companies and hiring managers in our 40+ years of experience. Often we find that hiring managers (not all) will look at a resume and make a hiring decision. I’m not speaking literally, but many great candidates have been discounted from consideration for a job because their resume didn’t look or say exactly what the hiring manager wanted.  Writing a perfect resume is a skill lacking in (most) job seekers. We suggest if the resume shows acceptable work history, size & scope of experience, relevant industry knowledge, etc then have a 30-minute phone interview to clarify. It may cost you 30 minutes, but it’ll be your insurance policy against letting a great candidate slip through the cracks because their resume wasn’t ‘perfect’.
