Here’s to 75 years of modern natural gas for our customers

By Brian Clark, PSE&G Vice President, Gas Operations

PSE&G’s modern gas system started in 1949 when we were connected to an interstate pipeline[1] for the first time, and that action continues to shape how we safely and reliably deliver natural gas to millions of New Jersey customers.

As we celebrate 75 years of modern natural gas, we should think back on the many substantial safety improvements made over the years – including better materials, piping, valves, technology and work practices. Such advancements make it possible for our teams to respond, within one hour or less, to gas leak reports made by the public.

We train, use modern practices and tools and work every day to keep our employees, our customers and our communities safe.

We are also able to deliver higher pressure gas to homes and businesses so that customers can use higher efficiency appliances – and save energy and money.

Our upgrades to natural gas pipes, devices and other infrastructure also mean that we continue to lower carbon emissions, and these same pipes can carry other lower-carbon fuels in the future – when newer technologies are perfected.

At PSEG, we’re powering a future where people use less energy, and it’s cleaner, safer and delivered more reliably than ever.

There’s no doubt that we’re in a time of energy evolution. We’re working hard to balance the needs of our customers, including affordability, with the needs of our planet, as 70%[2] of New Jerseyans rely upon natural gas for home heating.

So, the next time you’re cooking a nice family meal or, particularly in the months ahead when we face another New Jersey winter and want to crank up that thermostat, think a moment about all of the engineers, pipefitters, appliance service technicians and other tradespeople who work hard to keep you comfortable and safe.
