How Do I Become a Social Media Manager?

Someone on Reddit recently asked me for advice on getting started in managing social media.

(I don't mind sharing my knowledge, because, since nearly every business should have a social media presence, there's lots of room in the field! My peers and I often refer each other clients, subcontract among ourselves, and share knowledge - it's a very friendly industry!)

Hi Steve!

It's so exciting that you're thinking of becoming a Social Media Manager! The work is fun, if you like fast-moving fields and a chance to be creative. I love the ability to work from anywhere with internet!

I got my toes wet in social media at my day job as a Policy and Communications Analyst for a small municipality, running their social media, and creating email and website content. (Check out my very first case study! 🠮🠮🠮)

But, to get experience, a referral, and a case study, some people new to the field will approach a friend with a business, or a business in an industry they want to work in, and offer them one month free. One month, and that's it, or you could get stuck! Other people start on platforms like Upwork, with low rates to get experience. I don't think it's strictly necessary to work for free (I didn't), but it's an option to get started!

Here are some resources that I've found helpful:

• Sunny Lenarduzzi - a friendly Canadian with a great way of explaining things and a focus on YouTube
• Gary Vaynerchuk - a big player in the field with has lotssss of nuggets and insights. He's my go-to for inspiration, but isn't really a "sit down and walk you through it" kinda guy 
• Neil Patel - a brilliant marketer and top influencer on the web who's great at breaking down complex topics
• The Social Media Examiner - stay up-to-date with changes in the field
• Rachel Pedersen and Social Media United - this is where I got all my training, found my tribe, get support, bounce my questions off of, etc.  I have an affiliate link for a $1 one-week trial - it's definitely worth checking out!

The hardest part will probably be finding time to get started! Can you find an hour a day in the morning or evening, or even half an hour at lunch?
