How to Fix Scratches In 2021
Scratches! Scratches! Those unsightly scratches!
Repairable to the Unrepairable
Whether caused by an act of god, an angry spouse, a parking lot shopping cart litterer or an unhinged goose that has decided to battle its twin in the reflection of your shiny black vehicle, they can make an otherwise beautiful car look completely horrible.
Or maybe the scratches are self-inflicted, I am not only referring to the angry spouse scenario, but improper maintenance. Being counterproductive by wiping abrasive dust off your paint with that dry and dirty all purposed microfiber in your glove compartment or participating in the weekly line up at the automatic brush or “soft-cloth” wash.
Whichever the case, scratches are eye sores for its owners and when trying to sell, it has the potential to reduce the value and often the interest of a potential buyer.
There are plenty of common solutions to fixing scratches on vehicle paint these days, such as touch-up pens and coloured wax & sealants. While these solutions are generally uncomplicated for the DIY, these approaches only serve to temporarily mask scratches and often will be visible
There are more permanent solutions to scratch removal, which involves the use of abrasives, by hand or machine, to shave down fine layers of clear coat until the scratches are removed. Since scratches occur at varying depths in the clear coat, it can result in the substantial removal of clear coat to fully eliminate all scratches. The approximate thickness of automotive clear coat is comparable to the thickness 3, 3m post-it notes.
Is it safe in the long-term to have shaved down clear coat?
I feel it is fair to assume that auto manufactures have the cost to produce their vehicles right down to the last penny. If it were safe for manufacturers to have the paint on their vehicles any thinner without compromising overall quality, it would have been done.
Can scratches be removed by shaving down clear coat, but then replenished with a compatible 2 component clear coat?
The Answer is yes and it’s XKote
What is XKote?
A professional product that is not at DIY and requires detailers to take a 2 day seminar.
The future of #paintcorrection
X-kote is a 2 component (2K) Automotive clear coat that is applied by hand. X-kote is very similar in nature and chemistry to today’s spray on clear coats. The key to this unique technology is both X-kote’s ability to self-level completely flat when applied by hand, and X-kote’s proprietary chemical adhesion process. Typical spray on clear coats adhere mechanically, meaning they rely on a sanded or scuffed surface to adhere. Without this sanded or scuffed surface, that type of clear coat will delaminate or peel off. Xkote’s adhesion however, is a chemical process. X-kote actually cross links (becomes an integral part of) the original paint, rather than adhering on top, like a spray on clear coat would. This type of adhesion is much reliable and consistent, and allows for application without sanding or scuffing.
X-kote permanently repairs heavy scratches and scuffs, and brings faded, weathered, sand blasted paint back to its original factory luster.
Application time is reduced to a fraction of the time it takes to spray, resulting in much faster turnaround times and considerably lower costs. The end result looks, feels, and is as permanent as the factory coating.
Because X-kote is virtually the same as a spray on clear coat, it is 100% paint shop compatible and can be painted over at any time.
X-kote and the environment:
In today’s green conscious world, X-kote is an incredibly efficient and green alternative to re-spraying. As X-kote is hand applied and not sprayed, coverage is maximized and wastage is greatly minimized. An entire car can be completely covered with less Product than it would take to spray a bumper. This results in far less harmful greenhouse causing V.O.C.’s being emitted into the atmosphere.
