How to get found on LinkedIn by Talent Professionals

Last week I was joined by a former colleague to give you an insight into how Recruitment professionals, both agency and internal talent teams, use LinkedIn to find potential candidates.

The biggest take away from this is to ensure your profile is 'SEO' (keywords!) friendly, and relevant to the jobs you are looking for.

Let's say a recruiter was looking for a sales professional that has sold IT Managed Services around the data centre, specifically into the Education space. A basic search string might look something like;

 ("different sales job titles") AND ("Education" OR "Public Sector" OR "academies" OR "universities") AND ("Managed services" OR "cloud" OR "data centre")

 Entering the above into LinkedIn's search engine means I am asking LinkedIn to find people that include on their LinkedIn profile; a job title related to a sales role, mentions one of the words in the second set of brackets regarding education/public and also includes one of the terms in the third bracket relating to datacentre managed services.

 So what does this mean to you?!

I'm fortunate enough to have been through several training sessions on how to use LinkedIn, so put together good search sting (I hope!). I would hasten to bet most Recruitment professionals haven't been as lucky as me, meaning they will be less skilled at putting search strings together; BUT this does not mean the jobs/clients they are working with won't be your dream job or employer.

 Therefore, you need to make sure your profile includes the right keywords, and most importantly, the different variations of those keywords.

 Their search string might look something like;

 "different sales job titles" AND Education AND "Managed services"

You can see the difference here – your profile may include that you have sold into the public sector; still, if you haven't mentioned the specific vertical within the public sector you have sold into (in this instance Education) you wouldn't appear in the search and may have just missed out on your dream job. Equally, you may assume that because you work for a company known for selling managed services, you don't need to mention it on your profile. Unfortunately, you have not come up in the search again.

So what do you need to do?

 If you're looking for a new role, make sure the keywords you think a recruiter will use are on your profile. I would suggest having a look at different job adverts for positions you are interested in and look at what the requirements are asking for. From experience, this is where talent/recruitment professionals start when building their search strings.
