How technology is redefining the Transportation

The transportation industry is evolving very rapidly and is looking for a number of solutions for their ever-increasing business challenges. As per the recent industry trends, technology will play a major role in the evolution of the transportation industry. In the coming years' technology trends like AR (Augmented reality), VR (virtual reality) will be the major game-changer for this industry.

Automating maintenance and development

Automotive giant Mercedes is leading this revolution by integrating AR-based tech in their vehicles. The company has launched a new ‘Vehicle Lens’ application to streamline the process of maintenance in the trucking industry. This application uses image processing technology along with AR to show the maintenance-related data for your vehicle. You need to point this application to a specific part of the vehicle whose maintenance inputs you want and eventually the application, in a few moments, can process the data and immediately display the vital maintenance information. For e.g.- Point this application at the tires and you can immediately see the tire pressure level displayed in the application.

Improved training for tomorrow’s workforce

The use of virtual reality can change how new drivers are trained to drive vehicles. A driver, now through VR, can be trained to drive a vehicle in real-life scenarios without actually sitting behind the wheels. VR can simulate the whole experience of driving a car in all kinds of terrains before even driving an actual car. AR companies are also developing enterprise-level AR solutions where users through the help of Smart Glasses can do activities like remote material calling, access to contextual documentation, and step-by-step task guidance. This technology will be further expanded into other skilled trades. In the era of automation, all the manual roles are expected to be eliminated, VR along with AI training tools will be useful in future-proofing the global workforce and shortening the learning curve for the manual staff.

UPS (United Parcel Service) is using the combination of AR and VR technology in training their student drivers. This is done with the combination of a Video screen where the driver can see the terrain and a headset that helps the driver to spot the road hazards.
