Journalists and authors, such as those honored on May 21 in the 2024 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Book and Journalism Awards, “empower change. Their work is a rallying cry, drawing attention to abuses and inequities that cannot be ignored,” emphasized Kerry Kennedy in her opening remarks of this year’s awards ceremony, moderated by eminent journalists gathered to celebrate the outstanding work of their colleagues who are indeed speaking truth to power. CELEBRATING HUMAN RIGHTS FILMMAKING AT THE 2024 STTP VIDEO CONTEST

“Give ‘em hell,” was the impassioned rallying cry of Roswell Goransson and Ellison Martin as they accepted the 2024 Grand Prize at this year’s Speak Truth to Power (STTP) video contest for the film “Don’t Mess With Texas: An Abortion Story.” The video contest, now in its twelfth year, was created in partnership with the American Federation of Teachers and the Tribeca Festival to encourage students to use film to shine a light on human rights issues, celebrate human rights defenders, and create social change. CREATING A COMMUNITY FOR CHANGE AT THE 2024 JLYL FELLOW RETREAT

The John Lewis Young Leaders (JLYL) fellowship, which welcomed the newest cohort for the 2024-2025 academic year, provides mentorship, funding, and access to an extensive human rights network to college students who work with their communities to galvanize effective and sustainable change. As Sanaia Meneses, an incoming fellow, noted, “This program will make you think. This program will make you get creative... It is my wildest dream to [make my capstone] happen and I know that I will because of the support from this program.” Read more →

December 11—2024 Ripple of Hope Award Gala, New York, NY: This year's laureates include Lin-Manuel Miranda, songwriter, actor, director, and producer; Antonio Neri, president and CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise; John W. Rogers, Jr., chairman and co-CEO of Ariel Investments; and Tom Wilson, chair, president, and CEO of The Allstate Corporation.
