“I Better Pass My Neighbor” Has Become Silent: Portable Power Stations Are the New Cool.

Background - The energy transition race

As we gear up in the continent of Africa to achieve energy transition by ensuring low carbon emissions of greenhouse gases even, though Africa contributes about 4 percent of emissions- the lowest compared to other continents - we know, however, that we will be disproportionately affected the most by the effects of climate change.

Energy is key to the productivity of any economy on earth and, unfortunately, dirty sources of energy are still the most accessible and available sources of energy, but unfortunately, Africa cannot ignore the effects on the world if it uses these harmful fuels for its industrialization.

However, Nigeria seems to be making some progress as President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) on September 28, 2022, inaugurated the National Council on Climate Change, charged with the mandate to formulate appropriate policies toward achieving green growth and sustainable economic development for Nigeria.

Hopefully, the initiatives by this council will promote policies that improve the proliferation of renewable energy like solar in underserved communities in the country.

Enter Renewables: Nigeria, Energy Access and Renewable Energy Solutions

At least 43% of Nigerians do not have access to grid energy according to a report produced in conjunction with the International Energy Agency, International Renewable Energy Agency, United Nations Statistics Division, the World Bank, and the World Health Organization, indicated that Nigeria was followed by the Democratic Republic of Congo’s 72 million, Ethiopia’s 56 million and Pakistan’s 54 million access deficits.

Access is an important part of solving perennial policy problems of development. The lack of access to energy stifles growth and creates a cycle of unproductiveness. While energy infrastructure financing is a major part of the problem, policymakers have failed to identify that the “future of work” requires a lot of energy, and opportunities exist to create employment while solving the problem of access through renewable energy technologies, especially solar.

Off-grid energy provides a solution to electrification which is necessary for productivity. The shift in financing availability towards renewable technology from development partners like the AFDB and World Bank provides another opportunity for Nigeria to stimulate its private sector and invest in the infrastructure to allow the players to thrive while solving the electrification problem.

At Macosine, we believe access to energy will be key to unlocking the potential and productive capacity of the Nigerian youth - which constitutes about 53% of the population size.

Our affordable and highly efficient energy storage solutions such as the Ti10, Ti40, and Ti70 portable solar-powered stations are uniquely designed to serve this demographic.

The products are best applicable for small and medium-scale businesses that require energy to stay productive in their businesses. In our partnership launch event with Techen Group, the CEO of Macosine, Mr. Ayomide Ketiku said the partnership with our international partners would enable us to see how we can bring to light and develop, and innovate new solutions for the power system to work well.
