I Want “More Reducing” Because the Smallest Action is Better Than the Biggest Intention

At Berry Global, Inc. , we know everyone has the power to create change. This article is part of a series through our More Together initiative highlighting how we can #BMoreTogether by sharing personal passions for sustainability. What’s your More? Four years ago, I had an “ah ha” moment. Berry Global, Inc. had just announced it was participating in the Alliance to End Plastic Waste 's two-week #AllTogetherGlobalCleanUp 2020 challenge that rallied thousands of volunteers around the world, including Berry team members at over 100 global sites, to discover, identify, collect, and dispose of litter they found using the Litterati app. The winning site would receive a free lunch. I was struck by a photo my colleague Paola Mazzoleni posted of she and her daughters picking up trash together.

This image inspired me to take a walk on the beach to pick up trash the next morning. I uploaded my photos of the beautiful sunrise and with litter scattered all along the beach, then I created my own competition and sent a note to my family and friends inviting them to join. Things started happening all around Catalunya!

When I picked up my first piece of litter, I had a realization. Because this tech app helps people understand what type of litter they are picking up, I envisioned getting the tool into the hands of teachers at schools, policymakers in government, and more.

It started with my sister-in-law’s first primary school, Escola Mansuet, near Barcelona, then high schools and city councils started signing up. After that, we engaged the Catalan Government through the Agència de Residus de Catalunya and the challenge went national. Later on, with the help of my hometown high school that engaged nine schools from five European and Asian countries, the #CatalunyaCleanUpChallenge went global! This is how #inLoveWithNature was born.

Soon after, news cameras came to my hometown, Les Cases d’Alcanar, a very small, quaint seaside Mediterranean village, to learn more about how this trash and data collection competition went viral.

“I truly believe this initiative has been successful because it helps change people’s mindsets while protecting our environment when they come to the realization that it is not their litter, but it is their planet.”

Tech provides real-time analysis and data for action to improve the pollution problem, starting with cigarette butts and beverage containers because they make up the largest portion of litter. With the help of Litterati and a lot of generous volunteer hours, over 2,500 registered participants have picked up more than 1.5 million pieces of litter across 43 countries – including 225 municipalities in Catalonia – to date!

Professionally, I now integrate #sustainability into my day-to-day work and management of my team. At least one of our five annual goals, tied to performance reviews, involves proactively improving sustainability.

This all started by following my heart and passion for More Reducing. Then it exploded, in a good way! That’s the power of the small, local actions. The impact is almost zero if it doesn’t spread, but – if you inspire even one person – you can create a #ButterflyEffect that results in BIG, global impact.

I truly believe this initiative has been successful because it helps people adjust their mindsets while protecting our environment when they come to the realization that it is not their litter, but it IS their planet. This helps people appreciate the value in mapping, cataloging, and collecting pieces of litter and see themselves as part of the solution. After all, the smallest action is better than the biggest intention.
