The Importance of Your Vote in Today's World

Since the previous European elections in 2019, the global landscape has undergone significant shifts due to various crises like the Covid-19 pandemic and the War in Ukraine. These events have reshaped our perceptions and emphasized the importance of democracy in these uncertain times.

In this evolving world, Europe is faced with tough decisions and must address complex questions, challenging the very essence of democracy that the European Parliament upholds. As the cornerstone of democratic decision-making, the European Parliament serves as a forum where representatives from 27 EU countries convene to debate, compromise, and enact policies.

At the core of democracy lies the participation of citizens. European citizens play a crucial role in the functioning of the European Parliament, from electing representatives to shaping legislation that directly impacts their lives. Without active engagement from citizens, the strength and power of the Parliament diminish, undermining its fundamental principles.

Balance

In light of recent socio-political changes, European citizens have realized the profound implications of EU actions on their lives. Issues such as the pandemic, climate change, migration, and artificial intelligence have underscored the significance of European-level solutions. The European Parliament has enacted critical legislation in response to these challenges, such as the Migration and Asylum Pact and the Artificial Intelligence Act.

Impact on daily life

Our latest Eurobarometer survey revealed that 73% of European citizens acknowledge the impact of EU actions on their daily lives. This growing awareness has translated into an increased willingness to participate in European elections, with 71% of respondents expressing their intent to vote, a 10pp increase from 2019.

Democracy should never be taken for granted, especially in the current context. It is the collective responsibility of the European Parliament, its members, and European citizens to uphold democratic values. Voting serves as a symbolic expression of this commitment, allowing individuals to shape the future of Europe at various levels.

Beyond the act of voting, democratic engagement entails informed decision-making and active participation in civic matters. It is about amplifying one's voice, raising awareness about critical issues, and safeguarding the freedom that democracy affords.

As we navigate these challenging times, it is imperative for every citizen to contribute to preserving democracy, with the European Parliament playing a vital role in facilitating this process.
