Right now, we have an opportunity for an Information Security Analyst to join the Information & Security, Corporate Services team with Sydney Metro. Sydney Metro is a fully automated rapid transit system which offers a new generation of fast, safe and reliable train services. Sydney Metro’s Information & Security team are a dedicated and passionate team, proud of the work they do in contributing to creating new places and connecting communities for generations to come.

I was fortunate enough to catch up with the Director Transport Cyber Security Operations & Solutions, Nataliya Stephenson to gain some insights into this area.

Nataliya is an experienced Transformation Leader in Cyber Security and IT Operations space. With 20 years of comprehensive achievements across Engineering Projects, IT Policy, Governance, IT Operations, Security, Risk Management and Service Management, Vendor Management, and Commercial disciplines.

  • Cyber security has emerged as one of the most high-profile, cross-sectoral and rapidly evolving challenges in the modern age. What drew you to the industry?

It is actually not what drew me to the industry, but who drew me to the industry. One of my earlier mentors helped me get into the cyber security which was not that huge in early 2000s as it is today. However, he had a long-term vision that the industry would grow big and security would become non-negotiable for business. Having such a wise and experienced mentor from the industry played the big role in my career choice.

  • What accomplishments in your current position with Transport for NSW are you most proud of?

My awesome team is one of my biggest accomplishments. When I started with Transport, I was given a rare opportunity to build my team from scratch. Over the years, the team have evolved and grown. I am so proud to work along with so many talented people from diverse backgrounds and with diverse skills.

I am proud of being a strong advocate of diversity in workplace, and having such a tremendous support from Transport makes it even more rewarding. I have been collaborating with different recruiters to find different ways to attract females, young people, mature people to cyber security. In 2017-18, my team had 50/40 ratio in gender diversity. That was such a great feeling to know how much you can support your community by actively driving diversity.

I am also very excited about the prospect of launching a new program to enable Women in Cyber. Our HR business partner (Kyra Stanton) and I are working closely with a prominent industry partner and once approved the program will see a number of women join the Cyber Information Security Operation (CISO) team over the span of 24 months.

  • If you could give advice to your younger self, what would you say?

Find a good mentor and coach who can guide you throughout your career. If you can, find a career sponsor, a person, who will be your advocate in the industry.

Stay connected and create an extensive professional networking.

Security has many domains, and whilst it is important to choose in what you want to specialise, it is also important not to limit yourself to one or two domains.
