The Integrity Council's 'Two-Tick' Process explained
The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market is committed to fostering trust in the #VoluntaryCarbonMarket by establishing a global benchmark for what a high-integrity carbon credit looks like. Our science-based Core Carbon Principles framework and rigorous "double tick" assessment process are crucial to achieving our goal.
As we assess both carbon crediting programs and methodologies for adherence to our CCPs, let’s unpack the key components of the "double tick" process.
Tick 1: Building a Strong Foundation: CCP Eligibility✅
The first step in the "double tick" process is assessing carbon-crediting programs for CCP-Eligibility. We evaluate carbon crediting programs for strong governance by ensuring they meet our Core Carbon Principles criteria, meaning that they follow robust rules, drawing on the best available science, with high standards for governance, transparency, tracking and robust independent third-party validation and verification.
By achieving CCP Eligibility, a program demonstrates its commitment to responsible carbon crediting.

Tick 2: Delivering high-integrity carbon-credits: CCP-Approved Categories ✅
The "double tick" process goes beyond program governance. It also focuses on the methodologies that define how carbon crediting projects are designed, implemented and measured. Evaluating CCP-Approved Categories is the second step of our assessments.
Categories are groups of similar types of methodologies (for example, forestry or renewable energy).
Each Category undergoes a rigorous internal or multi-stakeholder assessment. This assessment identifies which methodologies in the Category adhere to the ICVCM's Core Carbon Principles (CCPs). It looks at elements including whether the methodology ensures the project is additional, permanent and considers its social and environmental impacts.

🔍 The power of two: What Does the "Double Tick" Mean?
For a program to issue CCP-labelled credits, it needs to be BOTH
This ensures not only strong program governance but also integrity in the rules for how the credited project has been designed and implemented. Credits with the CCP-label have met both requirements for integrity.
Together, our program and methodology requirements create a powerful framework that instils confidence in buyers regarding the quality and environmental impact of CCP-labelled credits.
Our work is helping build the #VCM 2.0 where buyers seeking high-integrity credits can rely on the CCP label. This streamlined approach will enhance trust and transparency within the VCM.
