Intel explains how its latest laptop chips and software will handle generating artificial intelligence

【Lansheng Technology News】Intel said that new chips due to be launched in December will be able to run generative artificial intelligence chatbots on laptops without having to use cloud data centers for computing power.

The feature, which Intel is expected to demonstrate at a software developers conference in Silicon Valley, would let businesses and consumers test ChatGPT-style technology without sending sensitive data from their own computers. This will be made possible by new artificial intelligence data processing capabilities built into Intel's upcoming "Meteor Lake" laptop chips, as well as new software tools the company will release soon.

Intel executives also expect the company to launch a successor chip called "Arrow Lake" next year and, as promised, Intel's manufacturing technology will rival TSMC's best manufacturing technology. Intel, once the best chipmaker but lost its lead, now says it is on track to return to the lead.

Intel has struggled to compete with Nvidia in the market for powerful chips used in data centers to "train" artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT. Intel said it is building a new supercomputer that will be used by Stability AI.

But the market for chips that handle artificial intelligence work outside of the data center is far from settled, and Intel is aiming to make inroads in that market.

Intel said that with a new version of the software called OpenVINO, developers will be able to run a version of large language models, the class of technology behind products like ChatGPT made on laptops by Meta Platforms. This will allow the chatbot to respond faster and means data never leaves the device.

"You can get better performance, lower cost and more private AI," Sachin Katti, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Networking and Edge Group, said in an interview.

TechInsights analyst Dan Hutcheson said Intel's approach might be of interest to business users tired of handing over sensitive enterprise data to third-party AI companies.

"Artificial intelligence is still in the category of technology that requires a Ph.D. to do it," Hutchison said. Intel CEO Gelsinger's challenge "is to democratize it. If he can make it happen and make it available to anyone Use it, and that creates a bigger market for the chips - the chips he makes."
