International Women's Day
On the occasion of International Women's Day, Karin Nelson , Technical Sales Support at Komatsu Germany GmbH - Mining Division shares exciting insights into her remarkable 45-year journey with Komatsu.
When did you start working for Komatsu?
I began my journey with Komatsu through an apprenticeship as a technical draughtsman at DEMAG Baumaschinen in September 1978. Following the completion of my apprenticeship, I transitioned seamlessly into a full-time role. Notably, DEMAG became part of the Komatsu family in 1999.
What is your area of responsibility?
Initially, I spent 15 years in the design department, specializing in crafting technical drawings for large hydraulic mining excavators. This involved diligent work on excavator designs, engine drawings, and their seamless integration into our machinery. Later on, I transitioned into sales, where I've since served as a dedicated sales administrator. In this role, I am responsible for creating excavator drawings and their applications for brochures and presentations. Additionally, I oversee the procurement and sales of our merchandising items.
After 45 years with the company, you probably know Komatsu better than anyone else. What makes Komatsu so special to you as an employer?
Without a doubt, it is the strong commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. During my career at Komatsu, I have seen first-hand that we are always looking at how we can use innovative technologies to reduce fuel consumption and minimize emissions. This dual focus not only benefits the environment, but also increases the company's operational efficiency and resilience.
Reflecting on your time at Komatsu, what's the most important lesson you've learned?
Above all, my career at Komatsu has shown me how important teamwork and a positive mindset are to achieve complex project goals efficiently and effectively.

What do you look forward to when you go to work in the morning?
Every morning I look forward to working with my competent and friendly colleagues. We also laugh a lot together, which contributes to a pleasant working atmosphere.
How do you organize your free time to create a balance with your work?
Outside of work, I prioritize activities that promote my well-being. These include leisurely walks, reading books, going for bike rides and spending quality time with my husband and friends over dinner.
What advice would you give to women who aspire to work at Komatsu?
I recommend that women should have confidence in their own abilities and ideas. This self-confidence is critical to receiving the respect and recognition you deserve. Also, take every opportunity for growth and development through training initiatives to advance your career. Finally, maintain a healthy work-life balance, as this is essential for lasting success.
What are your wishes for International Women's Day?
On International Women's Day, I wish all women a wide range of career opportunities and the chance to take on management and leadership roles.
