Internships...Don't waste time!

Disclaimer: the opinions expressed in this post are my own, and in no way represent my employer. Names have been removed for confidentiality.

This post stems from a recent trend I've experienced with students looking for an internship, but who do not have certainty of their availability. I'm not talking about the lack of certainty regarding the dates that work best for their internship. What I am talking about is the fact that they are not even certain if their university is going to give them approval to take time away from school to do an internship.

The most recent example -

I received a resume book from a student vehicle team at a university where I/we recruit from quite heavily, have spent time on campus, and have hired previous students as interns. The student resume was presented to a hiring manager, he was impressed, and asked me to schedule an interview. The student gladly accepted the interview request, did a great job on the interview, and was asked to conduct a second interview about a week later. Same story with the second interview. At this point things are looking great and the hiring manager asked me to extend an offer to the candidate. After informing the student that we want to make an offer, scheduling the offer call, discussing the offer details, etc. the student verbally accepted the offer. About a week later I receive the following email from the student:

I met with my academic adviser yesterday to make sure that the internship would only delay my graduation one semester and I learned that because of my accelerated track and when courses are offered, accepting the internship for the spring would delay my graduation a full year. For this reason, I am going to have to decline the internship offer. I greatly appreciate the offer and hope you'll consider me for future positions at Tesla.

Students, please, please, please confirm with your university that you are eligible to do an internship before going through the process with the recruiter, the interviewers, the offer process, etc. You need to be aware that behavior like this can, and will, tarnish your reputation with recruiters, companies, and your "personal brand". Please don't waste the time of others if you're not sure of your internship availability.

You are right. This situation is awful for both ends as working with Tesla team is a dream for many people like me. Unfortunately, I am not eligible for internship as I am graduating this semester. I think you should also include eligibility criteria like this (imposed by the company end), as this varies from company to company. It will help the students focus only on entry level positions. ( The interview call for which is hard to get if you are not a past intern at Tesla or do not have a recommendation) - view only from my own experience :-)

I would argue an internship at Tesla is worth graduating a year later (unless there are severe consequences, such as scholarships that would be terminated). As you mentioned though, this is something the student should think about before interviewing!

Chris Garinger This is a good point. Maybe this can be a future requirement question in the phone screening before scheduling the time with manager

What kind of impact does it make to the profile of the student? Does he stand a chance at full time or another internship later ?
