A Veteran in the Making

With a robust IT career spanning over two and a half decades, Benshoof's journey through the private sector, academia, health care, and various government levels has uniquely positioned him for this role. His extensive experience encompasses vital positions within the Nevada Office of the CIO (OCIO), notably as the chief IT manager of the Client Services Unit prior to his latest appointment. His tenure at the state dates back to August 2009, reflecting a deep-seated familiarity with Nevada's IT infrastructure and the nuanced challenges it faces.

The Mission Ahead

As CDO, Benshoof is tasked with an ambitious agenda: developing and implementing a comprehensive data strategy aligned with state goals, establishing robust data governance, and spearheading data analytics initiatives. This role, nested within the OCIO under the leadership of CIO Timothy Galluzi , is a testament to Nevada’s foresight in recognizing data as its “greatest asset” – a resource entrusted by Nevadans and a foundational element for the state’s exploration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

“I think there’s a lot of agreement that the use of data will play a critical role in shaping the future of our state,” Benshoof said.

The Role of Collaboration

"The importance of collaboration cannot be overstated," Benshoof remarks, highlighting the collaborative approach's necessity in aligning data initiatives with community priorities. His role as Nevada’s first state CDO, commencing on February 12, is a groundbreaking step towards establishing a cohesive data governance model across state departments.

Governance with Security at the Helm

The appointment comes at a crucial time as Nevada, like many states, grapples with the dual challenges of adopting cutting-edge technologies and ensuring the security of its digital assets. Galluzi’s emphasis on governance underscores a proactive approach to safeguarding this vital asset, with Benshoof at the helm to navigate these waters.

Empowering Transparency and Accessibility

One of Benshoof's key responsibilities will be to promote data transparency by enhancing public accessibility to state data through various channels. This initiative is not just about open data; it's about building trust and engaging the community in governance. By leading the Enterprise Data Advisory Board and developing a statewide data plan, Benshoof is set to play a crucial role in how Nevada harnesses data for strategic decisions, policy-making, and ultimately, in serving its residents more effectively.

Exploring New Technologies for Data Management

As part of his responsibilities, Benshoof is keen on exploring new technologies, such as AI and predictive analytics, to enhance service delivery and anticipate future trends. His belief in data's pivotal role in shaping Nevada's future is unwavering, with the potential to transform sectors ranging from the economy and education to public safety.

A Path Forward

Jason Benshoof's appointment as Nevada’s CDO is more than a personnel change; it represents a strategic pivot towards embracing data as a cornerstone of governance and innovation. With a rich background in state IT management and a clear vision for the future, Benshoof is well-equipped to lead Nevada into a new era of data-driven decision-making and policy formulation. As Nevada ventures into this uncharted territory, the state not only acknowledges the value of its digital assets but also reaffirms its commitment to securing and leveraging data for the greater good.

In the grand tapestry of technology, Nevada's move signals a broader trend: the recognition of data not just as a resource but as a responsibility. Under Benshoof's guidance, Nevada is poised to set a benchmark in data governance that is both strategic and secure, paving the way for a future where data truly serves the public interest.
