If Johnson wins, the country will lose..

Everything is at stake this week. Tomorrow, Boris Johnson will make a final bid to force Brexit through by the 31 October “do or die” deadline

The Guardian reports that there are growing signs that Johnson will make a renewed push for a general election whether his deal passes or not.

If the government can force its Brexit bill through Parliament in time, the UK could in theory still leave the EU by Thursday next week.

The Prime Minister will ask MPs to back him in two crucial votes on Tuesday – on the withdrawal agreement bill, enshrining the deal he struck in Brussels last week, and on his plan to ram it through the House of Commons.

This is what the Guardian reported tonight – and again, it’s the thought that Labour ‘rebels’ may come to Johnson’s rescue that fills me with dread and disappointment:

‘With the backing of some Labour rebels and the Tories who backed Oliver Letwin’s amendment at the weekend, Johnson is expected to win the vote on his bill known as the second reading, signalling MPs’ approval for it to proceed in principle.’

The government – with over 40 seats SHORT of a majority – is planning to ‘FORCE THROUGH’ a change to our country on a scale that even Thatcher and Blair – with huge majorities – would never have dared to do, at least not without due diligence and Parliamentary scrutiny.

There's NO TIME for 'due diligence and Parliamentary scrutiny' if Brexit is pushed through at breakneck speed.

If we leave the EU at the end of next week on this basis, it is the start of a coup, and a dramatic and drastic change to what sort of country Britain will be, not for the better, but for the worse, and from which we may never recover.

The stakes could not be higher…

HELPFUL EXPLANATION FROM THE BBC

For Parliament to approve a draft Brexit deal, MPs by law have to agree on its contents in principle, through a vote on a motion in the House of Commons - also known as the "meaningful vote".

Then, after that, the Withdrawal Agreement Bill - which turns the deal reached with the EU into UK law - needs to be passed.

But since the Commons Speaker refused a government request to hold a "meaningful vote" on its Brexit deal on Monday 21 October, the government plans to bring forward the Withdrawal Agreement Bill on Tuesday.

It is possible that the text of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill could contain a clause removing the need for a separate "meaningful vote".
