Join Us in Budapest for the 19th World Athletics Championships

This August, from Saturday, August 19th, through Sunday, August 27th, witness greatness at the 19th World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.

This year marks TDK's 40th anniversary of sponsoring this event. As an original sponsor of the event since the inaugural edition held in Helsinki in 1983, TDK has been proudly involved in this biennial event where over 2,000 athletes from 200 countries come together in the spirit of competition and fair play in track and field athletics.

Who can forget Carl Lewis' record-setting run in Tokyo in 1991 or Usain Bolt's unprecedented double sprint for world records in Berlin in 2009? Icons and legends like Sergey Bubka, Florence Griffith-Joyner, and many more have earned legendary status as they compete with other world-class athletes for the right to be called the best on the planet!

Considered one of the most prestigious and highly anticipated events in the sports universe, the World Athletics Championships bring together elite athletes from developing and developed nations to compete on a level playing field. Athletic disciplines range across the full spectrum of track and field, including sprints, middle and long-distance running, hurdles, relays, jumping events, throwing events, and combined events like the decathlon and heptathlon.

When World Athletics (WA), the governing body responsible for track and field, unanimously agreed to establish a tournament bringing together the top athletes in the world to compete for the highest honors, TDK jumped at the chance to support and sponsor the biennial event.

From the original bib sponsorship to today's elaborate and stunning LED display signboard, TDK's name has been associated with the world's athletes pushing themselves to their utmost limits through many dramatic moments. From Helsinki in 1983 to Seville in 1999 to London in 2017, through all the ups and downs — TDK has committed to being an official partner beyond 2029.

Participants in the World Athletics Championships include established athletes and rising stars representing their respective countries. It serves as a platform for athletes to demonstrate their skills, endurance, and determination while aiming to achieve their personal bests and national records. The World Championships often attract a large audience, both at the event venues and through television and online broadcasts, making them a significant showcase for athletics.

Not only do the World Athletics Championships align with TDK's values embracing matters touching on social responsibility, the environment, and helping advance athletics as a force for change in the world, but the games also parallel TDK's desire to contribute to society through evolving skills (or technologies) without limits.

In fact, since the Athens Games in 1997, TDK has supported the World Records Challenge as a primary sponsor and continues to present a $100,000 award honoring the athletes who achieve a New World Record.

Rising Stars Clinics

The Rising Stars Clinic connects with TDK's "Attracting Tomorrow" communication theme by giving young people eager to forge a new future the chance to interact with professional athletes and directly learn from some of the world's best athletes through unique challenge experiences and events.

As an Official WA Partner, TDK has continued to host the clinic for students interested in track and field athletics in connection with international events of the WA. The hope is that the experience will inspire these children to pursue athletic careers in the future.

TDK began sponsoring exchange events between children and active or retired athletes who act as mentors guiding and training children as part of the Rising Stars program. Since the London Games in 2017, TDK has invited kids to Rising Stars Clinics, where athletes like Aleia Hobbs, Ashton Eaton, and Valerie Adams act as ‘ambassadors’ training with groups of four or more children.

From the minute the kids first meet the athletes at the stadium, they have a busy, fun-filled experience that includes a warm-up and training session with the athletes on the official training grounds. Then they are led to the call room before entering the actual stadium, where they prepare for and run their 4X100m relay race.

After the race, the kids are guided to the mixed zone, where they learn what awaits the athletes after their competition. Continuing with the theme, the athletes do a mock press interview with the kids about their performances, and, as a special event, this year the children will be led to the medal plaza and have a small victory ceremony. To cap off the day, the kids and their chaperones are invited to watch the evening session in TDK's VIP seats.

Along with the Rising Stars Clinic, TDK is very much in line with the efforts of WA to introduce children to Track & Field via WA’s Kids’ Athletics Program.

Kids' Athletics Program

The Kids' Athletics Program was developed for young people worldwide to get them moving and inspire kids to develop their skills and confidence. The WA created the program for teachers and coaches from around the world to offer young people between the ages of four and 14 a distinctively enjoyable, motivating, and high-quality experience learning about athletics.

The program aims to introduce young children to the basic skills of athletics in a fun and inclusive manner. It provides a structured framework for teaching athletics, focusing on fundamental movement skills and developing a love for physical activity.

Kids’ Athletics is designed to be adaptable and flexible, allowing it to be implemented in various settings such as schools, clubs, and community organizations. It provides a wide range of activities and games that focus on developing agility, balance, coordination, running, jumping, and throwing skills. These activities are age-appropriate and cater to children's varying abilities and interests.

Additionally, the program has been developed to include simple-to-use teaching resources, instruction booklets, and guides to support the Kids' Athletics Program. Through enjoyable and social games, kids are taught activities that foster the movement and skills essential to athletics while also providing chances to introduce athletic disciplines and competitive athletics.

TDK supports this global movement that places children and young people at the center of athletics and athletics at the center of community health and fitness by sharing our enthusiasm and experience.

World Athletics Championships and Technology

As technology has evolved, so has TDK's support at the World Athletics Championships. TDK started with sponsor bibs and has continued to evolve with world-class signboards leveraging TDK's name recognition.

In 2015, at the Beijing Games, TDK enhanced the signboards with LED and, again in Oregon in 2022, further optimized the LED boards with TDK power supplies. This is the same LED power supply technology used in baseball stadiums, soccer venues, and athletic fields around the globe.

Also, paralleling the rapid advancement of smartphone technology, smart QR-code-based electronic ticketing capabilities have grown at each year's events, rapidly replacing paper tickets that were issued in years past.

And while a photographic judging system has been in place since the beginning, slit video capabilities now capture thousands of images per second, with infrared rays used to capture finish order and times.

Visually, smartphones and 5G technology now encourage multi-angle functionality for those watching in real-time from their seats in the stands. And, for spectators worldwide, large screen viewing opportunities at venues in local communities allow people to come together and feel the excitement of World Athletics competition in their hometown.

Stop by the TDK Booth located in the Budapest city center to try your hand at our Virtual Reality games of 110m hurdles and the pole vault.

To Sum Up

The World Athletics Championships host athletes from around the world every two years to compete in various disciplines, including track, field, road, and combined events. It brings together the most prestigious group of established athletes and rising stars competing to see who is the best in the world.

Overall, the World Athletics Championships serve as a global stage for the world's best athletes to compete, inspire, and push the boundaries of human potential in the field of athletics. It celebrates athleticism, determination, and the pursuit of excellence in track and field events.

TDK is honored to be a cosponsor of this event again in 2023.
