The Journey After 8 Years
When I sat in the parlor window seat at Jordan House at Smith College preparing for exams and listening to study music on my walkman, I did not yet know I would enter into the practice of law. I knew I would go on to higher education and go on to, hopefully, do great things by leaving each seat I occupied better than when I entered it.
Graduating from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1994, I knew I would practice law though I did not yet know what that practice may look like. I entered into the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office as a Assistant Criminal District Attorney. I loved being in the courtroom every day and in trial every week. After some years and over 100 trials later, I entered into private practice continuing to build on my experience and reputation. It was time for me to take the skills I learned as a prosecutor to another venue. I began serving as litigation counsel to school districts and other governmental entities. Not long after being in private practice, I began to serve as outside counsel to governmental entities and private entities, providing legal guidance in day-to-day operations.
After several more years of firm work, visiting with mentors and family, and spending time in prayerful contemplation, I decided to open my own law practice in June of 2011. This was the beginning of LM Tatum, PLLC. Somewhere along the way, I served on the Commission for Lawyer Discipline and became President of the State Bar of Texas, the first African-American to do so. Those exciting extra-curricular activities supplemented my work at the firm serving and advocating for clients. For more than 8 years now, I, working with my team, have had the privilege and honor of serving clients through legal services delivered by my own firm.
Though my team has changed in size and people over the years, as firms often do, LM Tatum, PLLC has been blessed with attorneys who have stepped up to the call of the firm and met the challenges of our clients’ needs. And, they did so and do so brilliantly. We have well over 25 years of experience in the practice of law, and even more years in the practice of life. Our experience spans significant breadth. We help clients with independent investigations that enable them to identify challenges, improve processes and take their entities to new levels of height. We have an extensive history of working with our clients in their day-to-day operations handling transactions, employment concerns, and litigation. We offer guidance in policy development, management and governance. We help clients form and build businesses as well as restructure, grow, and, yes, wind up or sell businesses. On the more personal side of life, with our assistance, clients have planned for their families future while they are on this earth as well as help their loved ones continue on after passing to the next life.
At LM Tatum, PLLC, we focus our practice primarily in the areas of meeting business and corporate law needs, addressing employment law issues of concern, assisting governmental clients with public finance demands, and guiding clients through simple estate/contingency planning in order to meet family needs. Our clients are individuals, nonprofits, private companies, small businesses, and governmental entities. 5yNot surprising that a Smithie would welcome all the various challenges and growth opportunities. I lived next door in Gardiner (several years before you were at Smith!). Congrats on a great career—and for sharing it with us. Hope our paths cross some time.
