Nurturing your hobbies can be transforming - My own story.
In life, you will meet two kinds of people. Ones who build you up, and ones who tear you down. But in the end, you will thank them both. I have many such wonderful people in my life. First one on the list is my physical training teacher, Samuel Sir.
Everyone has a talent. What is rare is the passion and the courage to nurture it in solitude. If we nurture our mind, body, and spirit, our time will expand. We will gain a new perspective that will allow us to accomplish much more. When a habit begins to cost money, it tends to become a hobby. Singing happened me accidentally.
Crooning is one of my favorite hobbies. For many, singing may have different meanings but for me, it is a way to connect with self, my audience and express the unsaid. It is also a way to reinforce the power of passion. We can be drunk with passion - passion to excel, succeed, make things happen, change and transform. Singing does not cost money, for sure. Besides, a hobby is hard work you wouldn't do for a living. 'When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece' said some. People like us are born with a need to express that's just innate. Here’s my YouTube channel. Please do check out:
How did singing happen to me?
When I was in the 3rd class, all students of the class took a shelter under a huge tree in my school campus in the middle of a game when it suddenly started pouring heavily. To keep the students engaged, every student was asked to do something; either sing a song, recite a poem, mono-act etc. Our physical training teacher, Samuel Sir, ordered me to sing as most of them had already done all the above just to add novelty. I begged him saying that I cannot sing. Finally, I gave in to his demands as he was very strict and known for giving tough punishments.
What started accidentally as a onetime attempt, turned out to be a blessing in disguise? Soon I realized that I can sing and had become overnight popular and every time there was a free period, I was made to sing a song. One thing led to another and in no time started taking part in debating, extempore, essay writing and even excelling in studies! My teacher came like a blessing to me. Our mind is a magnet. If you think blessings, you attract blessings. If you think of problems, you attract problems. It’s always important to cultivate good thoughts, and always remain positive and optimistic.
So far as studies were concerned, there was no other option than to do well. The thought was, how can someone who is doing well in other areas can score less? So much, so that I even started playing football as that was the only popular game, though I did not like it much as it meant injury, heat-sun and dirt. I am surprised even today how I could make it to District Tournaments to represent my school in football.
Phew! Recognition and appreciation makes you to do things which you thought you could never be able to do. My teacher once told me not to lower my expectations to meet my performance. Instead he asked me to raise the levels of my performance to meet my own expectations first. My attitude since then has been to expect the best of myself and then doing what is necessary to make it a reality.
Like the mirror never loses its ability to reflect, even if, it is broken into thousand pieces. So, never change your ‘core’ in any situation. World loves a man who can smile in trouble that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. Perhaps, this is the business of little mind to shrink, but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his dreams and principles till the end.
There have been times, I failed when I tried something new. My teachers generously forgave me. Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future.
What consumes your mind controls your life. At some point, you just pull off the Band-Aid, and it hurts, but then it's over and you're relieved. We either make ourselves miserable or make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same. There is something wrong with our character if opportunity controls your loyalty. I struck to singing, volunteered and leveraged every opportunity that came my way. In any given moment we have two options: To step forward into growth or to stay back into safety.
When we are motivated by our goals that have deep meaning, by dreams that need completion, by pure love that needs expressions, then we truly live. Thinking of these moments keeps me aware and inspires me to be a kind and do the best. You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you unless you are ready and passionate to excel. This can be a spiritual experience. There is no other teacher better than your own soul.
Sometimes, we never understand the moment unless it becomes a memory. Life is measured in love and positive contributions and moments of grace. The butterfly doesn’t count on months but on moments and still has enough time.
This journey from a school kid to a corporate citizen yet nurturing the spirit of singing throughout offered its own high and low. I met many talented and gifted people who were much better. I realized life does not have an universal measuring tool so I stopped comparing myself with them as that would not make me better. Because, I knew that I have lots of blessings that others will envy for. Thank God for his blessings.
So enjoy what you have, you have just one life. Happiness doesn't come from having everything, but happiness is making the best out of what we have, it's all about how we see ourselves. Eventually, happiness begins where comparison and competition ends. That’s the joy of singing the song of life for me!
Excellent message to bring back the rhythm of life.... You've inspired many, but this last line of the story would bring into someone more than just inspirations would "Happiness doesn't come from having everything, but happiness is making the best out of what we have, it's all about how we see ourselves. Eventually, happiness begins where comparison and competition ends."
