Key 2019 smartphones trends: what are their must-have features going forward?

As 2019 gets underway, the features and capabilities of the smartphones in our pockets continue to grow exponentially. However the time available for all of us to use them is limited, indeed for most of us, time pressures are generally growing! So what are the features we should take note of and what are the particular breakthroughs we should consider adopting over the year ahead?

Bezel-less screens will optimise the smartphone visual experience

To be clear, the smartphone bezel is all the plastic or metal on the front of a phone that isn't screen space. It provides a frame for the smartphone screen. Where it exists, the bezel provides the place setting for the phone speaker, the on/off button, the front camera or the touch controls such as the return or multiple-screen display command. It’s likely that space given over to bezels will decrease over the coming months or indeed disappear altogether; this is likely to apply to tablets too as much as smartphones. Why? Simply because the front of our smartphones is becoming one big touchscreen and viewing screen.

There are some arguments for retaining the bezel – such as for avoiding accidentally touching on-screen icons or controls and offering some physical protection to the screen itself – but as we’re using smartphones more and more as TV or YouTube screens, as

e-readers and mini-computers, every millimetre more that’s given to the visual experience is outweighing the rationale for retaining the bezel.

Augmented Reality is adding a powerful new dimension to smartphone use

Augmented reality (AR) will be one of the biggest game changers for smartphone features and usage in 2019. Your smartphone view of almost anything could be transformed over the coming months as the device adds a whole new layer of information for you. It’s basically the merging of computer graphics with your view of the real world. This could be anything from working instructions for your new kitchen toaster to simplifying your view of a local, but unfamiliar and perhaps chaotic high street on your next city-centre holiday break! Neither of these AR views would be from YouTube videos either – AR apps give you know-how and intel on the view in the here and now and can show you answers overlaid on screen content in real-time, such as the answer to: ‘Show me which of my favourite clothing brands are in stock at the fashion shop on the right and are they my size?’

Splash-proof smartphone protection is a must have

There have been major advances in the product performance of Splash-proof and liquid protection coatings for smartphones. P2i, the liquid protection expert who have protected over three hundred million smartphones to date, has upgraded the coating to improve contact angles and protection against any liquid ingress, whilst also maintaining the nano thinness of the coating.

The coating, produced by the revolutionary Splash-proof X process, is also Oleophobic, providing protection for sensitive components from exposure to environmental oils, grease and sweat. Furthermore, with improvements made in the process that chemically bonds its patented water-resistant coating to electronic devices, OEMs can now process up to twice as many devices in the same amount of time. The benefits of increased reliability, reduced water ingress, reduced risk of corrosion and greater durability make P2i’s latest coatings a must have smartphone feature for 2019!

2019 will be the year 5G arrives at scale

5G will bring us much faster speeds and much lower latency (i.e. lower delay times) and greater bandwidth for smartphones. It will enable not only excellent delivery of augmented reality but hugely improved streaming resolutions, holographic displays, enhanced power and next-generation cloud computing. A significant plus of 5G is greater resilience against performance failure or degradation in urban or densely packed areas. Definitely a must have feature! And several of the major mobile players have already confirmed their launch of 5G for this year including the Samsung Galaxy S10, the Huawei P30 and the OnePlus 7.

Foldable smartphones will open the door to greater choice of user experience

Foldable smartphones have a hinge somewhere on their structure that folds or unfolds a larger than usual mobile screen, offering a tablet sized screen that can be folded to fit in your pocket. Its benefits include greater convenience over carrying a tablet device, greater user experience for running games or apps and multiple views to offer much wider choice for users. With more space to play with, it’s likely too that camera performance can reach new heights. Finally the larger physical smartphone form means there is space for more powerful hardware such as batteries and processors.

Whilst the New Year holds many uncertainties, certainties we can be sure of are that the new wave of 2019 smartphones will be even more powerful and more dependable and will provide greater water protection. Also that their features will be even more exciting than their predecessors. It promises to be an extraordinary smartphone year!
