In the continuous effrort to enhance child nutrition and education throughout Africa, significant progress has been made through the collaborative efforts of the African Union and its partners:-

  • Establishing a Framework: The development and widespread distribution of the Continental Guidelines for Implementing Homegrown School Feeding Programmes provides a clear framework for effective program implementation throughout the continent.
  • Increased Investment: Member states are demonstrating a growing commitment by increasing their investments in domestic financing for school meals. This investment rose from 34% in 2020 to 45% in 2022.
  • Knowledge Sharing: The African Union has fostered transparency and knowledge sharing by producing and disseminating key publications and biennial reports on African school feeding programs. These reports detail both successes and areas needing improvement, guiding future efforts.
  • Program Expansion: School feeding programs are reaching more children than ever before. In 2024, 65.9 million children benefit daily, compared to 65.4 million in 2020 and a significant increase from 2016. This expansion aligns with the goals set by the AU Assembly.
  • Policy Adoption: As of 2022, 89% of countries have implemented a school meals policy, demonstrating a substantial increase from 68% in 2020. This signifies a growing commitment to supporting children's nutritional needs through policy initiatives.
  • Economic Impact: School feeding programs contribute to economic growth.Estimates suggest that in 2022, for every 100,000 learners receiving meals, 757 direct jobs were created across 33 countries, primarily for cooks and caterers.
  • Collaborative Efforts: The establishment of the HGSF Cluster by the African Union and Member States signifies a focus on fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships. This aligns with the "DELIVERING AS ONE" approach and supports the long-term vision of the AU Agenda 2063.

These achievements highlight the positive progress made towards ensuring better access to nutritious meals and education for children across Africa. Continued collaboration and dedication are crucial to ensure further progress and long-term sustainability.
