LEADERS WITHIN REACH: JOHNNY CHAUVET DESIGN + UX LEAD @ TRIBALSCALE
MEET JOHNNY
I’M THE DESIGN & USER EXPERIENCE LEAD AT TRIBALSCALE, WHICH DELIVERS INNOVATIVE SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS FOR MOBILE, IOT, AND ALL SORTS OF CONNECTED DEVICES. I’M OBSESSED WITH TECHNOLOGY’S IMPACT ON OUR EVERYDAY LIVES, AND I USE DESIGN AS A MEANS TO EMPOWER AND DELIGHT THOSE WHO EMBRACE IT, AS WELL AS ENCOURAGE AND INSPIRE THOSE WHO DON’T.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
Currently I’m working on a few mobile projects, including one in the VR space which I’m really excited about. Other than that I’m more focused than ever on my personal growth, particularly my leadership, communication, and team-building skills. I’m also constantly experimenting with different design tools and processes which I’m having lots of fun with. Lastly, I’m taking an online course that Ideo put together on Human Centered Design with a few colleagues and friends, which has been really insightful so far.
HOW HAS YOUR NETWORK INFLUENCED AND INFORMED WHERE (OR WHO) YOU ARE TODAY?
Networking put my career progression in the fast lane. You don’t realize just how small the tech and design community is in Toronto until you go to tons of events and see the same faces time and time again (not just meet ups, but all sorts of events!). Once you get a sense of it, you begin to learn who you really should introduce yourself to and make a good impression with. The connections I’ve made at these events are the same people that have given me countless opportunities to grow.
Even my current position at TribalScale came about because I met one of the co-founders at a Hackathon 3 years ago. We worked together on a pet project, and as a result got to show off my chops as a designer & my passion for technology (it was a Google Glass hackathon). Years later he offered me the position because he knew from previous first hand experience that I would be a good fit. It’s kind of crazy come to think of it, you never know who the people you meet today will turn out to be in the future. You may have already met the co-founder of the next Facebook and just don’t know it yet!
WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST, IN TERMS OF THE “NEXT BIG THING” OR EVOLUTION FOR TECHNOLOGY (OR ENTREPRENEURS) THIS YEAR?
There’s so many “next big things” that are happening all at the same time this year! Asking me to pick just one is like asking what’s the best episode of The Simpsons (there’s so many!). So I’m going to give you my top 3:
The “Internet of Things” is starting to become more defined as all sorts of devices are interconnecting and leveraging Big Data to create really immersive, seamless, and intelligent experiences, the likes of which were only ever seen in Science Fiction.
VR is really taking off this year, which means big things in the world of entertainment and gaming. We’re on the cusp of revolutionizing the way we consume and interact with content in a much more immersive and empathetic format. Sure we look a little funny with huge goggles mounted on our heads, but like anything else the hardware will get smaller, cheaper, and more accessible with time.
Artificial Intelligence. Personal assistants that can interpret natural language and human emotion. Self driving cars. Enough said.
BEST ADVICE FOR A NEWBIE TO GET THE MOST OUT OF ATTENDING AN AFTERWORK NETWORKING EVENT?
Don’t go in with a sales pitch, or with the goal of closing a deal or landing a client. Sure you need to be professional, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have very casual conversations. Try to make friends! Build the foundation for a future working relationship with someone by just being very genuine with them. The rest of your business objectives will fall into place.
Also, beef up your LinkedIn account. Then after you meet someone of interest to you, add them on LinkedIn and shoot them a quick “It was nice to meet you” message as soon as you get home or first thing the following morning. That follow-up is crucial because any business or job opportunities will flourish from that conversation.
FAVOURITE APP? WHY?
Todoist! I’ve tried all the to do list applications out there, and Todoist by far is the best. The desktop and mobile apps are really well designed, and has a great UX that understands natural language. I can throw a task in my Work To Do’s and type ‘remind me tomorrow at 3pm’, and it sets up a push notification for me without any pickers or other means of input. It also syncs instantly to all my devices, my computer, and integrates with my calendar. It takes a lot of thinking out of my day so I can focus on getting things done.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT REACH?
When I’m at a crowded event and I quickly check Reach to see who’s around me, and realize that someone I know is also here, so I find him/her and get to catch up!
