Leadership Communication: Make Your Mark with the 7 Steps for Impactful Presence
Consider the story of Emily, a rising VP at a global tech firm, who learned a crucial lesson early in her leadership journey. During a key investor meeting, Emily decided to speak off-the-cuff, relying solely on her extensive knowledge and spontaneous enthusiasm. Unfortunately, her presentation lacked focus and failed to address the investors' primary concerns, resulting in a missed opportunity for funding that could have propelled several strategic initiatives. Stung by this setback, Emily resolved to change her approach. For her next major presentation, she meticulously prepared, honing her message to ensure clarity and impact. She rehearsed extensively, aligning her data points with the strategic interests of her audience. This time, her well-structured presentation captivated the stakeholders, securing the necessary endorsements and investments. Emily's turnaround not only marked a personal success but also underscored the profound impact of preparation on effective leadership communication.
By meticulously organizing their thoughts and structuring their delivery, leaders can effectively convey their vision and drive meaningful engagement.
Effective communication is pivotal for leaders seeking to inspire and influence their audience. A strong presence, characterized by confidence and clarity, not only captures attention but also reinforces a leader’s authority and credibility. Preparing thoroughly before delivering a speech is equally crucial; it ensures that the message is not only compelling but also tailored to resonate with the audience’s expectations and needs. By meticulously organizing their thoughts and structuring their delivery, leaders can effectively convey their vision and drive meaningful engagement. This preparation paves the way for the seven steps of impactful communication, each building upon a foundation of clear, persuasive, and well-planned dialogue that aligns closely with the goals and values of both the leader and the audience.
The 7 steps of impactful communication
You can use these 7 steps as preparation for any presentation. It sharpens you as the communicator delivering a core message that is highly relevant to the audience and adds significant value to a real need they have.
1. Target Audience: Who is your target audience? Who are the most important people you are speaking to? For example, an investor, your employees or customers.
2. Emotional Status: What is the emotional status of the audience? (especially those in the audience who are the most important). Are they, for example, curious, stressed, frustrated, inspired, or skeptical?
3. Grounded Respect: What is your grounded respect for the audience? (find a specific example of why you respect them. For example, is it something they have struggled or are struggling for, something they have achieved, values they live by, or something unique they are known for)

4. What is your main message? Structure your presentation in such a way that the audience leaves the room with: A thought, a feeling, and an action.
5. Story: Make sure to include a story in your presentation. It could be a personal experience, a future scenario, an example from the company, a case, or similar. A story always includes time, place, person, and an event.
6. Opening: Find an opening that starts your presentation. This opening should capture the audience's attention. Avoid introducing or "warming up" - start precisely with something that is surprising and awakening. It could be a personal story, an example, a question, a statement, a metaphor, a rhyme, an invitation, etc.
7. Conclusion: Make a memorable conclusion - what the audience should remember or feel after your presentation. Always end on high
In conclusion, the impact in leadership communication is about mastering the art of speaking. Leaders like Emily exemplify how the power of a well-prepared presentation can dramatically shift outcomes, earning trust and opening doors to new opportunities.
