Leading with Purpose: A Conversation with Ashutosh Inamdar, CEO of Lupin Life Sciences

Leadership is about much more than titles and responsibilities in today's fast-evolving business world. It’s about purpose, people, and the ability to steer organizations through change with resilience and vision. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Ashutosh Inamdar , the newly appointed CEO of Lupin Life Sciences, and what followed was an insightful discussion on leadership, innovation, and the future of pharma.

The Journey from Analyst to CEO

Every leader’s journey is unique, but few are as inspiring as Ashutosh’s path from starting as an analyst to becoming the CEO of a rapidly growing company in India’s pharmaceutical sector. Reflecting on his career, Ashutosh shared a lesson that resonates with all of us:

"Leadership is not just about mastering hard skills; it’s about mastering people skills. As you rise in your career, your success increasingly depends on your ability to manage, motivate, and grow the people around you."

Ashutosh’s early career saw him working closely with senior leaders at companies like Mahindra Group and Gammon India. These experiences shaped his approach to leadership, emphasizing the importance of decision-making, people management, and a constant commitment to learning.

Leading in a VUCA World

One of the major challenges Ashutosh discussed was balancing short-term profitability with long-term strategic goals in an unpredictable world. The pharmaceutical industry, like many others, faces constant changes in market dynamics, regulations, and competition.

"Every day is different in the business world. The only way to stay ahead is to combine a strong tactical focus with a clear long-term vision," Ashutosh explained.

He emphasized the importance of setting a strong foundation for the business before aiming for growth. In the first year of his tenure, the focus was on stabilizing operations, aligning teams, and ensuring that the company’s short-term performance was on track. Now, with a stronger base, his strategy is shifting towards a more long-term vision—aiming for 3x revenue growth and 2x profitability in percent increase in the next five years.

Industry Trends: The Future of Pharma

The conversation quickly turned towards the exciting trends shaping the pharma industry, both in India and globally. Ashutosh highlighted some key trends:

  1. Growth of Trade Generics – The trade generics segment is growing at nearly twice the rate of the overall pharma market, driven by India’s focus on making medicines affordable and accessible. Lupin Life Sciences is at the forefront of this trend, leveraging its robust quality standards to build trust and scale in this segment.
  2. Technology and Innovation – From personalized medicine to direct-to-patient services, the pharma industry is expanding its reach and impact. Ashutosh pointed out that companies that go beyond medicines to offer holistic healthcare solutions will be the ones to lead in the future.
  3. Quality and Trust – With the Indian government’s push for higher quality standards, especially in trade generics, the industry is seeing a shift. Companies that adhere to stringent quality measures will emerge as leaders in the coming years, as trust becomes a differentiator in the marketplace.

The Importance of People-Centric Leadership

While Ashutosh is focused on innovation and growth, he is clear about one thing: people come first.

"You can't achieve anything alone. A CEO’s role is to build a strong team, foster a culture of accountability, and empower people to take ownership of their work," he said.

One of the most striking insights from our conversation was how Ashutosh prioritizes recognizing and rewarding performance. He shared that when employees see that performance is truly valued, they feel motivated to go beyond their job descriptions and contribute to the company’s success in more meaningful ways.

Culture is another critical piece of the puzzle. As Lupin Life Sciences continues to expand, maintaining the company’s strong values and culture becomes paramount. Ashutosh believes that a company's culture is not only a driver of internal cohesion but also of external success, especially as the organization scales.

Leadership for the Future

When asked about the qualities that distinguish great leaders from good leaders, Ashutosh provided a thoughtful response:

"Great leaders are those who can adapt, listen, and make tough decisions without losing sight of their core values. In a world where everything is constantly changing, adaptability and emotional intelligence are the keys to long-term success."

Ashutosh’s leadership is not just about making the right decisions for today but about preparing Lupin Life Sciences for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow. By fostering a culture of learning, embracing innovation, and putting people first, he is steering the company towards a future filled with promise.

Final Thoughts

In a world that is as volatile and complex as the one we live in today, leadership requires not just skill but also purpose and vision. Ashutosh Inamdar’s journey offers a powerful reminder that the best leaders are those who stay true to their values while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

As we wrapped up our conversation, I asked Ashutosh what advice he would give to young professionals aiming to follow in his footsteps. His response was simple yet profound:

"Learn from your failures, build strong relationships, and never stop growing."
