Leveraging Blasting Efficiencies for Cost Savings: A BME Success Story
A recent case study, BME demonstrates how innovative blasting techniques can lead to substantial cost savings while enhancing operational efficiency.
Operational Challenges Met with Innovative Solutions
Faced with issues of poor blast performance and unstable high walls due to excessive burdens and inefficient pre-splitting, a South African coal mine sought a solution to optimise coal recovery without escalating costs.
BME’s Technical Services team stepped in, identifying key areas for improvement, notably in pre-splitting and burden management. By adjusting the pre-split design, including the powder factor and explosive charge per hole, the team was able to achieve more controlled fracturing and uniform material size—critical factors in mining efficiency.
The Results: Cost Savings and Enhanced Safety
The modifications led to an impressive 11% reduction in drilling meters per blast, eliminating the need for an additional 60 holes or 1,800m of drilling per typical blast. This strategic adjustment bolstered high wall safety and translated into cost savings of ZAR7.8 million over 12 months in drilling, explosives, and accessories. Moreover, the project did not compromise on production performance or fragmentation results, underlining the effectiveness of the new blasting approach.
A Model of Innovation and Efficiency
This highlights the power of innovation in mining operations. By rethinking traditional blasting methods and embracing efficiency-driven techniques, mines can achieve safer operations and significant cost savings. The success of this project showcases the potential for similar initiatives across the mining industry, where operational challenges are met with smart, sustainable solutions.
For mining operations looking to enhance safety and reduce costs, BME can offer insights into the benefits of strategic blasting techniques.
