Austrian liberals gain seats in national election

On 29 September, Austria held legislative elections to elect all 183 seats in the National Council. ALDE Party member NEOS, led by Beate Meinl-Reisinger, received a record 9.2% of the popular vote and won 18 seats in the next mandate, pending final results. The result represents a gain of 1.1 percentage point from the last legislative election held in 2019, when liberals won 15 seats thanks to 8.1% of the popular vote.

Rutte takes office as NATO Secretary General

On 1 October, Mark Rutte took office as the new Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) at a ceremony in Brussels.  The former Dutch Prime Minister takes over from Jens Stoltenberg after the end of his ten-year tenure at the helm of the Alliance. Rutte was confirmed as Stoltenberg’s successor in June by the North Atlantic Council after he received support by all 32 NATO allies.

Liberals call for world peace at UNGA

During the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, liberals including European Council President Charles Michel, Prime Ministers and Ministers from European Union Member States addressed members on topics including world peace and ongoing conflicts. "We see serious violations of international law go unanswered, and international crimes go unpunished,” said Ireland's Tánaiste Micheál Martin.
